Regular meeti.ng of the Board of Public Safety �n°as held on Mon-
day, January I.7, 1938, at 9:00 A. M. All members-were present.
The minutes of the previous• meetin� were read and apprQVed.
Cl.aims in the amvunt of �726.35 from the following suppliers
were approved and ordered gaid:

FIRE DEPARTi�IENT -_ Chief Freeh present:
I�Iatters pertaining to the operation of the Fire Department
were discussed with the Chief.
Application for a position on the Fire �Department was submit-
ted by Charles DeVos and ordered p3.aced on file. .
ELECTRICAL DEPARTTvIEAtT_-_�Ir. Qualls present:
�Ir. �ua1ls _ submitted an Annual Report cvvering the activities
of the Electrical Department for 1937, eopy of which was furnish8d
each member of �he Board and, a copy is placed on file in the office
of the Board of Public Safety.
Nr., Qualls submitted the Annual Report af the Police Radio for
tne year 1937, copy of which is furn.ished each member of the Board
and one copy placed on file in the o�fie� of the Board of Public
Saf ety.
POLICE DEPARTi�IEIVT_ - _Chief Lane present: �
City Traffic F.�gineer PJiiller reported his investigation of the
elimination of parking on Pierce Street between Leland Avenue and
Cushing Street and recommended taat parking be eliminated on the
south side oP the Street, The R��rd upon regular motion. seconded
and carried concurred ir�. his recora.mendativn and orders were_�issued
to have it carried out. � _ .
A request was received from theIn'�ernationai Union United Auto-
�obile Workers of America, Stuelebaker Loca1 ivo. 5, requestin� that
Z4'alter Nowicl�i and Leo ?�iestez° be commissioned as special police
Officers while attending meetinga of the Union at their headquart-
ers. The Boerd agreed to this and special commissians are author-.
ized. The Union was so notified.
Applications for positions on the Police Department were re-
ceived from Donald J. Underly and �'Villiem YY. Taylor, and ordered
placed on file.
WEIGHTS AND MEASURES - �Ir. Burns present:
Mr. Burns submitted his repvrt Por the week ending January 15,
shol��ing 199 inspections made �which� report� i.�on file in the office
of the Board oP Public Safety.
A representative of the Gra�d Trunk Railroad was present with
reference to the Board's request� tc� display flashers at their Green-
lawn Crossing and requested the privilege of removing the Plashers
now at their cr��ssing on I�totre Dame Avenue and place them at Green-
lawn. The Board, a.f�ter discussing�this��matter fully, re�'erred it
to Traffic Eng�.neer Miller, for� investigati:on, and a traffic count
at Notre Dame and also at Greenlawn bePore �fin al decision is made.

A communication Pror� Traffic Engineer Miller with referenee
to the intersection of Yestern Avenue_ and �alnut .S�reet was read,
shobr3ng a decrease -o�' -IQO;�a in accidents -during the first year af-
ter the installation of '2eft turn" signals at this--intersection,
and pointing out .al.so that in the saine�•period "right turnt' and
"rear-end" call3.sions had increased and recommending that a strict-
er enforcement would probably solve this problem. The matter v��as
referred by the Board to the Chief of Pol.ice for attentian.
