MEETING March 8, 1937
Regular meating of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,
March 8, 1937, at 3:00 A. M. All members �ti�ere present.
Minutes of the previous meeting were re�d and approved.
Requisitions in the Fire Dep�rtment numbers 03650 to 03665 and
in the Police Department numbers 455 to 473, 3.nclusive, were ap�roved.
Cle_ims, from the following suppliers, in the amount of �1,013.81 and
peyroll in the various departments amounting tv �19,086.61 were
approved and ordered pa3c�.

FIRE DEPARTAIIEIVT - Chief Freeh present:
Matters pertaining to the operation of the Fire Department were
discussed with the Chief.
ELECTRICAL Dg'AFcTT�iENT - Mr. �,ualls �resent:
TQr. �u.alls advised that it is necessary to renew our Radio Station
Li;cense and application Uras ordered made.
POLICE DEPARTrdENT - Chief Lane present:
TJir. Aleg Langel, Township Trustee, was present and requested that
a police officer be stationed at the ��Iadison School from 8:30 A. M. to
5:30 P. M. to quiet any disturbance that might arise among the VY.P.A.
workers. After a full discussion with the Chief, it vras decided that
this would not be done until there was more evidence of disturbance.
The owner of the Lyric The�.tre at 2220 V�iestern Avenue requested
that the curb at the entrance of the Theatre be painted yellow to enable
patrons to unload at that point. The natter was referred to Officer
I��iller.
Officer Justus C. Bloom, having been confined to his home on
account of sickness for a period of sixty days, the Board took the
necessary nction by regular motion seconded and carried to place
this Of�'icer on pension. The Officer having been appointed March 5,
1915 and having served twenty tv�ro years, the Board directed that
application for pension be made ePfective I��arch 19th and that the two
weeks on regular pay be considered as his vacation for 1937. p�

A petition signed by seventeen residents on Grace Street,�from
the Oliver factory entrance to Arnold Street. This petition was
referred to Officer rtiiller for investigation and recommendation.
0�'ficer Miller recommended that parking be eliminated on. the east
side of V'lalnut Street north of Yaash. - Street for a distance of 100 ft.
�lso on the �ti�est side of Vlalnut Street south of VUashington for the
sa�e distance. The Board concurred and ordered instructions be given
to the Chief of Police.
Officer Miller requested the approval of the Board for the
removal of a stop sign on Linden Avenue at Walnut Street, for the
reason that this being a dead end and the sign is not necessary and
a study of the situation warranted its removal. The Boa.rd concurred
and the Chief was instructed to carry out this arra.ngement.
Officer P�Riller made a report of the traffic conditions on Sample
Street betUteen Lafayette and Michigan. He recommended that the

overhea_d traffic signal at Tutt and Lafayette be Lnoved to Main nnd �
Sample ar!d th�t the three overhead signals on Sample Street be
synchronized to operate seventeen seconds of green east and west and
seventeen seconds green north and south with a three second split �:�6'°'•
This matter was referred to Mr. Qualls for further investigation and
recommendation.
. A communica.tion vaas received from Casimir H. Shupe, R. R. 2,
Box 100, suggesting that the City of South Bend construct underground
passage on the two principal downtown corners. This matter was
referred to Officer Ernest Miller for his recom�aendation from an
.engineering s-tandpoint.
