Regular meeting of the Bo�,rd of Public Saf ety tivas held on P,2onday, �
J'anuary 4, 1937, at 9:00 A. M. All members v�ere present.
Minutes of the tzti�o previous meetin,s v�ere read and approved.
Reciuisitions in the Police Depa-rtment numbers 341 to 352, in-
clusive, and in tne Fire Department numbers 03595 to 03600, incl.usive,
� z��ere approved. Claims in the amount of �98.05, fron the �'ollav�ing
suppliers, were approved and ordered paid.

FIRE DEPARTTvTENT - Chief Freeh present:
The Chief submitted his report o�' the activities of the Fire
Department for the year 1936, which report is on file in the of�'ice
of the Board of Public Safety.
A comr;iunication �vas received from a committee a�pointed by the
South Bend Firemen�s l�ssociation, requestin� the Board to authorize
the payment of their regular pay if injured vn their day of�'. It v,�as
regularly moved, seconded and carried that this comrnunication be
referred to tne State Representative, tiNalter S. Arnold, and the
Firemen's Association was so noti�'ied.
The Chief requested tne privilege of purchasing 1600 ft. of i'ire
hose at this time, due to tne necessity o�' replacing this much or
more hose at once �'or tn.e various stations. The Bo�rd authorized him
to purcnase the above� amount, it l�eing understood that bids shall be
received from various hose manufacturers and tnat the ord�r be split .
four ways if price and qu�lity justify it.
POLICE DII'ARTP�I�'11TT & ELECTRICA.L DEPT. - Chief L«ne and T�Zr. G�ualls present:
The matter of radios for the new police cars was discussed by the
Bo�rd with Chief Lane and T�Tr. �ualls and it tivas decided to install the
old radios taken from cars being traded in a�'ter the Electrical Depart-
r�.ent has put them in first-class condition. It ivas also agreed that
if the present order for the netiar Philco radios cannot be cancelled
entirely, that one new Philco �vill 'oe placed in the armored car,
recently �urchased, and one in a cruiser. It was also agreed to
purchase radio antenna for the new cars.
The Board also discussed the nlatter of cooberation in the Elect-
ric�1 Department and �the forr�er decision of the Board tivas con�'irmed
tnc�t the Radio Department was in charge oi' ldr. �ualls, suPerintendent
o�' the Electrical Department.
Regular monthly report of the Accident Prevention Bureau was
submitted to tne Board and a copy furnished each member. This report
is on file in the o�'�'ice of the Board of Public Safety.
Request w�s received from G. �. Bursley 8c Company oi' Elkhar� for
� loading zone occupying the space of six cars on ��tiestern Avenue at
�2ain Strzet. The Board did not feel justified in granting this request
and the Bursley Comp any was so notified through a personal call 1�y
their manager, TVIr. Lan�le.
Continuation certific�tes in favor of the follov,in� �olice
officers tivere a.pproved by the Board: Homer Ames, Louis Kish, Casimir
Kubiak, Ed �Jlorris, Bert Olmstead, Doyal Rhymer, L+'dmund Vitou, Ellsv�rorth
Butz, Richard Gillen and Karl Smith.
Applica.tions for position on the Police Department titiere received

Mr. Burns submitted his report of the inspections made for the tiveek
ending Januar,y 2, 1937, shovring 160 inspec�ions.

l�lir. Burns reported that ne had spent two and one half days
checking coal peddlers in the City, and arrested George Beyers
and John U�illi�ms on December 28th �'or violation of the State
Coal Act, and arrested Harvey Ropley on December 30th for the
same violation, both cases being set for January 6th.
The meeting adjourned at 10: 30 A. M.
