�EETING October 12, 1936
Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday,
October 12, 1936, at 9:00 A. M. All members �vere present.
11'Iinutes of the previous meeting �vere read and approved.
Requisitions in the Fire Department ntunbers 03522, 03523 and
03�24 and in the Police Department numbers 191 to 203, inclusive,
were approved. Claims in t�e amount of �257.70, from the follo�ing
suppliers, were approved and ordered paid, also payrolls in the various
departments for the first half of October amounting to �16,978.89.

FIRE DEPARTI�IENT - Chief Freeh present:
P�Zat�ers pertaining to the Fire Department Qzere discussed with
the Chief, who requested privilege of purchasing a nerv siren for
No. 2 and one f'or No. 4 Fire Stations. There being sufficient funds
in the apnropriation, the Board authorized this purchase.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTN�NT - T�r. Qualls present:
Matters pertaining to the operation of the �.lectrical Department
��ere discussed v�ith hlr. Qualls.
�'1EIGHTS & I��ASURES DEPARTI1+SIIVT - PJlr. Burns present:
NLr. Burns submitted his report for the past week, sho�ing
inspections in the amount of 379 for the week. This report is on
file in the office of the Board oP Public Safety.
POLICE DEPARTMENT - Chief Zane present:
The Chief reported upon request of the Hinkle T�Totor Company for
fifteen minute parking restrictions to be established in f ront of
their place of business. Officer l�2iller, of the Accident Prevention
Bureau, recominended that this request be granted, and the Board
concurred in it and instructed the Chief to make the necessary
arrangements.
A request received from James S. Steele, 1221 tilood��ard Avenue,
for the establishment of stop signs on Hudson Avenue, making �iJoodward
a through street, was referred to the Accident Prevention Bureau,
who reported that the condition was investigated and the safe approach
speed to the intersection is far belov� that v�arranting stop signs
and, therefore, recor�mended that they be not installed. The Board
concurred in this and �ir. Steele raas notified.
A report was received from the �ecident Prevention Bureau in
reference to condition at T:�ain and l:2arion Streets in response to
petition of fifty-five petitioners that the traffic be controlled
at this intersection. The report recommended that stop si�ns be
installed on both sides of LIain Street on Nlarion Street , making �jain
a through street at this intersection. The Board concurred and Chief
Lane �as instructed to take proper action.
� report ti�as received from the Accident Prevention Bureau
regarding the situation at the intersection of l:Iain Street and Indiana
Avenue. - � Recor�mendation r�as made that this situation be handled by
having an officer from the souad car in that district direct the
traffic at this intersection each evening from 5:00 to 5:15 P. Tti�. ,
leaving the stop signs as they are. The Board concurred and the Chief
of PoliCe v�as instructed to carry out this program.

Mr. R. J. Gill of Gill-Vorn Company �ras present and offered to loan
the City of South Bend and its Police Departmen� a Chevrole� car for
its o�vn use and to be replaeed at the end of the year v�i�h another car.
This matter was referred to the City Attorney for investigation and
further consider�tion by the Board at its next meeting. "
