All members �vere present. Minutes of the previous meeting �vere read and approved. Requisitions in the Police Department numbers 154 to 165 and in the Fire Department numbers 03502, 035�3 and 03504 v�ere approved. Erickson Co. , Inc. 40.80 FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: The Chief reported that the matter rePerred to him for investi- gation regarding parking of bicycles in front of the Palace and Granada Theatres had been investi�ated and that arrangenents had . been made with the managers oP the Theatres to keep the sidetivalk -clear in the future. ELECTRICAL DEPARTI�NT - Mr. �ualls present: Mr. Qualls reported that the several matters referred to him recently regarding traffic si�nals in various �arts o� the City had not been fully investigated and that his report ti7ould be made at the next re�ular meeting. POLICE DEPARTP�IT - Chief Lane present: The Chief reported that some difficulty had been experienced on account of double parking of pleasure vehicles v�hich are used for delivery of inerchandise and suggested that a special tag be furnished o�vners of such vehicles, indicating that it is a delivery car. The Board authorized the purchase of two hundred cards to be issued to such owners, sho�ing all necessary information regarding the operation of the car �hich �ill enable the police to properly designate cars that are entitled to double parking consideration. The Chief of Police requested the privilege of sendin� Captain Bert Olmstead to the North�estern University Traffic Officers School which v�ill be held from October 12th for three �eeks. The Board authorized this arrangement and the expense to be charged to the Police Department Instruction Account. • � cornmunication vras received from �r. N. R. Bessel, Treasurer of the Iuar Nlain Corporation, requesting that the curb along the �vest side of the I�Zar I�Sain apartment building be set back, so that such space may be available for parking cars at an angle. After fully discussing this matter, no advantage nas found in cleanin� the streets at night and request g;as not granted. The Secretary �as instructed to notify �lLr. Bessel. A request vras received from G. R. �l'ierrill, operating Filling Station at 1117 Beyer Avenue, requesting that the curb on each side of his drive�ray be painted orange for distance of about three feet to prohibit parking close to the curb entrance, tivhich �as approved by the Board. A cor�munication was received from nine residents in the 700 block on East 6�enger Street subr�itting their appreciation for the cooperation of the Board in prohibiting all day parking in that block. The Secretary �as instructed to corn�nunicate vrith the petitioners and thank them for their letter. The ChieP reported on the pe.tition of property o�vners on North Johnson Street, �aho requested that all day parking be prohibited in front of their residences, that he had communicated �o � � � �.� with the OtBrien Varnish Company and they had given instructions to � their employees to park their cars at a convenient point on Orange Street rather than North Johnson Street. The Chief reported tha� 20 ft. loading zone at 115 and 116 Eas� �R�ayne Street for the Superior Store Fix�ure Company had been estab- lished according to instructions from the Board. The Chief reported that private taxi cab stand at the north�vest corner of Colfax Avenue and Michigan Street for Mr. Humberger had been established according to instructions from the Board. A communication ti�as received from Ernest H. Miller of the Accident Prevention Bureau �vith reference to three hour parking at 1901 South R�ain Street and 1126 South �Lafayette Street. He stated that these loeations were no different than many other places in that vicinity, due to employees of the various factories having no other plaee to park their cars. .After discussing the matter, it was referred to the Chief of Polioe for further investigation. , A oommunication was received from Officer Miller of the Accident Prevention Bureau enclosing letter from John W. Gibbons, Executive Secretary of the South Bend Civic Safety Council, requesting that a fund be set up for the purchase of traffic signs of various kinds for use in the City at an expense of �1,040.00. After discussing in detail the use to tivhich these signs are to be put and their practi- cability, the Board felt that no definite action could be taken at this time and the Secretary was instrueted to tivrite r�Ir. Gibbons of its action. Applications for position on the Police Department ��ere presented by �'rank E. Janko�vski and John Szilagyi and v�ere ordered placed on file. j"7EIGHTS 8c MEASURES DEPARTMENT - Mr. Burns present: Mr. Burns submitted his report of inspections made during the week ending September 12th, shov��ing 328 inspections.
