Regular meeting oP the Board of Public Safety vras held on l�onday, �
July 6, 1936, at 9:00 A. 1�. tL11 members v�ere present.
�2inutes of the previous meeting vaere read and approved.
Requisitions in the Fire Department numbers 03435 to 03440,
inclusive and in the Police Department numbers 3� to 51, inclusive,
were approved. Claims in the amount oP :�1,140.33, from the following
suppliers, mere approved and ordered paid, also. payroll of the various
departments amounting to :�17,133.18.

FIRE DEPARTT,9ENT - Chief Freeh present:
�. discussion �as had tiaith the Board and the Trustees of Clay, Center,
Portage and German To�nships and Alfred E. TtTartin, Portage Tot�mship
Attorney, �ith reference to fire protection in the adjoining townships.
After a �ull discussion of the matter, it v�as tentatively agreed that the
various torvnships would make arrangements to purchase the necessary fire
�e��a�atus at an expense. of from �800.00 to �1,000.00 to be housed by the
South Bend Fire Departinent and to be manned and used at its discretion
either in fires in the townships or in the City. It was further
arranged that I�r. Pd�artin �ould draw up an agreement betvreen the various
tov�nships` and the Board of Public Safety, setting forth definitely the
arrangement entered into. It was also agreed that Green Township and
y�arren To�tnship, which t��ere not represented at this meeting, would be
invited to �oin in the arrangement.
The Chief again brought up the matter of No. 1 aerial ladder,
setting forth the fact that it was very dangerous to use this ladder,
and after thoroughly discussing the matter, it �vas regularly moved,
seconded and carried that the City Attorney drativ up an Ordinance appro-
priating from the General Fund the sum of y�750.00 Por the purchase of
a new ladder, v�ith the understanding that such parts of the old ladder
as can be utilized shall be used.
ELECTFiI�AL DEPARTMENT - r3r. Qualls present:
&7atters pertaining to the operation of the �lectrical Department
were discussed and �ir. Qualls made various reports of his operations.
�'dEIGHTS & ��A►SURES DEP�RTNIENT - Idir• Burns present:
Ir1r. Burns presented his weekly report for the �reek ending July 3rd,
showing number of inspections made of 362. This report is on file in
the office of the Board of Public Safety.
POLICE DEPARTMEDIT - Chief Lane present:
A full discussion of the activities of the Yolice Department with
reference to traffic violations in the city was had. The City �ttorney
expressed his vievrs as to the operation of the hccident Prevention
Bureau, and it v�as regularly moved by P�r. rroodv�ard, seconded by

to leniency to be sho�vn first offenders.

A oommunication from the iyiayor vras submitted to the Board, in
which he desi�nated a number of police officers who had served as
such for twenty years or more and are entitled to pension benefits.
He further stated that on account of their age and o�her possible
deficiencies these officers should be required to take a physical
examination to ascertain if they are still qualified as efficient
police officers. It vras regularly moved, seconded and cnrried that
this physical examination be ordered and that the Chief notify the
individuals to be examined this �veek, so that a complete report can
be presented to the Board at its next meeting on iionday, July 13th.
The officers vrho were so notified are as follows: i:2ichael Rzepka,
Valentine Delinski, Fred DeLee, Frank �lendo��ski , Samuel Koczorowski ,
Ydilliam rJcMahon, Axel B. Tholander, Tustus C. Bloom, Frank Ferger
and Carl 1�uinther.
The Chief presented a communication signed by Patrick Burns
of the Accident Prevention Bureau, calling attention to the fact
that two people �aere killed and seventeen injured at Ironvaood Urive�
and Pv;eKinley �venue and su�gesting that a flasher caarning si�nal
be erected at this intersection. The matter �ras referred to
�:ir. C�ualls.
The Chief presented a communication from Ernest h. P�iiller of
the Accident Investigation Bureau in regard to underpass abutments
in the city and he recommended that at Bronson and T�ichigan Streets
and at �yestern and 6'ralnut Streets serious accidents have happened
and that he vlould suggest illuminators be installed at these t�ao
locations. The matter r�as referred to Itir. �,ualls �'or investigation
- and recommendation.
. �egarding petition for restriction of parking on East ti'�enger
Street in the 700 block, vrhich was referred to the Chief of Police,
a report tivas made by Captain Olmstead in vzhieh he states that this
street from P:Zarietta to High Street is very narroti� and a very bad
situaticn exists since cars are parked on both sides and it leaves -
room only for one car to pass betti�een them. He reports that
arrange�ents have been made to eliminate parking on the north side
of �lenger Street in tYie 700 block.
The Chief presented a report of Francis J. Bock, Chief Radio
Operator, of the activities and broadcasts of the Radio Station
for the month of June.
Report also �las subr�itted by the Chief of the Auto lletail,
sho��;ing automobiles stolen and recovered and other activities of
this department for the month of June.
The Chief also presented a detailed report of the activities
of the Police Department f or the month of June.

Con�inuation certificates covering poliee bonds in Pavor of
Harold 0. V�hitmer and Fred DeLee tivere approved by the Board.
