RESOLUTION OF THE SOUTH BEND REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
RECOGNIZING JON R. HUNT FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE TO THE
CITY OF SOUTH BEND, THE SOUTH BEND REDEVELOPMENT
COMMISSION AND THE DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNITY AND
ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT
WHEREAS, Jon R. Hunt has been an employee of the City of South Bend since 1975 and in
his eighteen years of public service has served as Community Development Planner, Director of Community
Development, Administrative Assistant to the Mayor, Redevelopment Director and Executive Director of
Community and Economic Development; and
WHEREAS, Jon has been and continues to be a quiet, driving force behind a number of
innovative projects in South Bend that have been years ahead of their time and are now being replicated in other
parts of the state, including the location of Stanley Coveleski Regional Stadium in downtown South Bend, the
reopening of the East Race Waterway, the neighborhood planning effort in several of South Bend's older
neighborhoods and the master plan for the Airport 2010 project; and
WHEREAS, Jon, with innovation, planning, leadership, and vision leveraged declining federal
funds through his vision of establishing various not - for -profit corporations to work cooperatively with local
government to achieve economic development, housing rehabilitation, downtown redevelopment and
neighborhood commercial district revitalization. Further, through judicious use of declining public dollars, Jon
has been able to leverage private investment through vehicles such as the Business Development Corporation,
Urban Enterprise Association, Housing Development Corporation, Center City Associates, and the
Neighborhood Business Development Corporation that Jon was a catalyst in forming; and
WHEREAS, no challenge is too great to discourage Jon. His long range planning, his eternal
optimism and his indefatigable nature keep the City of South Bend moving forward; and
WHEREAS, it is almost impossible to describe the dedication of Jon Hunt to his work. He
is honest, straightforward, dedicated, works incredibly long hours and is constantly striving to learn more, do
more and solve new challenges. He respects his staff and is respected by his staff, he welcomes suggestions
and ideas, fosters creativity and his door is always open to staff as well as to the public; and
WHEREAS, Jon is committed to making South Bend an excellent place to live. In order to
accomplish this he never forgets the public that he serves. He works to keep the public informed and builds
consensus to achieve not "the City's" plan but "the community's" plan. He is sensitive to both business needs
and neighborhood needs and works to share his vision and build coalitions of support. He encourages diverse
groups to articulate their goals and incorporates these goals into community consensus; and
WHEREAS, Jon R. Hunt was recently awarded the Ivan H. Brinegar Municipal Management
Award by the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns in recognition of his dedication and his
accomplishments.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE SOUTH BEND REDEVELOPMENT
COMMISSION, governing body of the City of South Bend Department of Redevelopment, that Jon R. Hunt
be recognized for his distinguished service to the City of South Bend, the South Bend Redevelopment
Commission and the Department of Community and Economic Development.
Adopted at the Regular Meeting of the South Bend Redevelopment Commission held on
October 15, 1993 at 1308 County-City Building, 227 West Jefferson Boulevard, South Bend, Indiana 46601.
