LUECKE, MAYOR COMMUNITY ~L ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT September 19, 2005 South Bend Common Council 400 County-City Building South Bend, Indiana 46601 Dear Council Members: SHARON T. KENDALL EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR The attached ordinance will appropriate two Weed & Seed Department of Justice grant awards: (1) The third year grant of $224,956 for the period of January 1, 2005 -December 31, 2005. and (2) The Supplemental Grant Award for $100,000 for the period of October 1, 2005- September 30, 2006. Third year funds are being used for programming related to the Weed & Seed required areas of Law Enforcement, Community Policing and, Prevention, Intervention and Treatment activities which include Safe Havens. These activities build upon the first two years of programming. The Supplemental funds are a separate opportunity provided to communities who, due to a policy change by Justice, will no longer be eligible to submit for a fifth year of funding under the Weed & Seed designation. The supplemental funds were offered specifically for program activities at public housing sites in Weed & Seed areas. To that end the programs/services to be provided will be for the residents of La Salle Park Homes. I will present this ordinance at your meeting on October 10, 2005. Please contact me with any questions prior to then. Thank you. Sincerely;l JJ , _ __ _ _~~ Pamela C. Meye ~~ Director ~ Community Development cc: J. March C. Nesbitt M.
