RESOLUTION NO. 2083
A RESOLUTION OF THE SOUTH BEND REDEVELOPMENT COMMISSION
COMMEMORATING THE CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE LATE JON R. HUNT,
ON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE "JON R. HUNT PLAZA"
WHEREAS, the South Bend Redevelopment Commission ( "Commission ") is the governing
body of the City of South Bend Department of Redevelopment; and
WHEREAS, Jon R. Hunt served as Executive Director of the City of South Bend's
Department of Community and Economic Development from May, 1982 until his death on February
22, 2003; and
WHEREAS, Jon dedicated himself in service to the community since commencing his career
with the City in 1975, first as a Planner in Community Development, then as the Mayor's
Administrative Assistant under former- Mayor, Roger O. Parent and finally as Executive Director for
the Department of Community and Economic Development; and
WHEREAS, Jon was a long range visionary who worked tirelessly on behalf ofthe City and
strove to improve the quality of live for residents by his unselfish dedication to various community
and economic development initiatives; and
WHEREAS, Jon was instrumental in implementing hundreds of projects to the benefit of
the community, including, but not limited to the following:
Airport Economic Development Area; AM General Headquarters; American Home
Dreams; Blackthorn Corporate Park; Blackthorn Golf Course; Blue Heron;Bosch
Expansion Project; Boys and Girls Club; Business Development Corporation; Central
High School Apartments; Charles Martin Center; City Plan; City Housing Strategy;
Colfax Cultural Center; College Football Hall of Fame; Commerce Center;
Commercial Corridor Program; Coveleski Stadium; Community Revitalization
Enhancement District ( "CRED "); Crowe Chizek Expansion; Design Packaging;

Emporium; Economic Development Professionals Network; Environmental Health

WHEREAS, Jon loved the challenge of "not a simple project" and finding a "win/win"
outcome whenever possible nearly as much as he loved baseball (the Cubs) and lawyer j okes and the
music that filled his office; and
WHEREAS, Jon was an ardent supporter of the arts and, in particular, the arts in the
community; and
WHEREAS, Jon dedicated himself to making South Bend a better place to live and work
and improving the quality of life for all its residents.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the South Bend Redevelopment
Commission that:
1. The Commission hereby p ublically commemorates the late Jon R. Hunt for his
unselfish dedication and for his many contributions and services to the City of South
Bend.
2. The Commission hereby endorses and supports the South Bend Redevelopment
Authority's determination to rename and rededicate the Morris Civic Plaza as the
"Jon R. Hunt Plaza" in honor of Jon and in tribute to his memory and his many
valuable contributions to South Bend.
This Resolution shall be in full force and effect upon its adoption.
ADOPTED at a meeting of theSouth Bend Redevelopment Commission held on August 20, 2004,
at 1308 County -City Building, 227 West Jefferson Boulevard, South Bend, Indiana 46601.
