6th Annual Explore South Bend Bus Tour Introduces New
Students to the City
This year marks the 6th year of the annual New Student Bus Tour sponsored by the City of South
Bend,Notre Dame, and TRANSPO in conjunction with the area colleges and universities. The
tour will introduce incoming new students from the University of Notre Dame, Saint Mary's
College,Holy Cross College, and Indiana University South Bend to all that the city of South
Bend has to offer. This year, Graduate Students have been invited to participate as well. The
tour will take place, Monday, August 22 from 5:00pm to approximately 7:00pm.
The tour is designed to showcase the many facilities and attractions that make South Bend the
regional center for arts, culture, sports, entertainment, dining, and commerce, along with the
educational opportunities that South Bend has to offer while providing students with a glimpse
into the city's historical past. The event has grown each year, and this year, the students will
view the new Civil Rights Heritage Center as well as Innovation and Ignition Parks, allowing
students to be eye-witnesses to the city's newest growth and development.
TRANSPO will again provide the buses for the 300 students expected to attend, while the tours
will be led by volunteer"local experts" who will not only point out the many sights on the route
but also share personal stories from living and working in the city. The buses will depart from
designated locations at each of the four colleges and universities and travel around the city,
through downtown area and surrounding neighborhoods to highlight the diversity abundant in
our community.
Students will be able to see Coveleski Stadium, Studebaker Museum, Center for History,
Potawatomi Park and Zoo, East Race waterway, Century Center and the Morris Performing Arts
Center, in addition to locally owned restaurants and retail along the route and an array of local
business and commerce opportunities.
The tour will conclude at the Jon Hunt Plaza in front of the Morris Performing Arts Center,
where the students will be able to experience some of the area's great homegrown pizza. While
enjoying pizza on the Plaza, students will be welcomed by Mayor Steve Luecke along with
representatives from the Morris Performing Arts Center, TRANSPO,Notre Dame Student
Government,Notre Dame Community Relations, the Chamber of Commerce, the Convention
and Visitors Bureau,DTSB, and the South Bend Symphony. The students will have a chance to
win raffle prizes including gift certificates from local restaurants and the grand prize of Notre
Dame Football tickets. As they conclude their visit, the students will take a walk down to the
South Bend Chocolate Cafe for a dip in their chocolate fountain and then board the buses to
return to campus.
Boarding Locations:
• Notre Dame—In front of the Hammes Bookstore
• Saint Mary's College—LeMans Hall
• Holy Cross College—Front Circle
• N South Bend- In front of the Administration Bldg. on Mishawaka Avenue
Return to Campus—All buses will board on Washington St, next to the College Football Hall of
Fame.
