Jefferson South Bend, IN 46601 Dear Honorable President Jones, We, the undersigned South Bend tax payers, respectfully request that the South Bend Redevelopment Commission reintroduce agenda item 6.c. (4) #bm the 5/24/11 agenda to the 6/14/11 agenda. This issue has been the source of on -g °rebate since 1996. Further debate will only lead to more adoptable animals being eu ,'„ due to the significant space constraints at the current South Bend Animal CareAd Co A1(SBACC) facility. u ., Respectfully, we urge the Redevelopment Commission t6",';u t the request for additional funding for the new SBACC facility for the foll peasonse a .: • SBACC manages over 4,000 animals eac *Wl)4e t #b, severely:,11mited holding space in the current facility , wefaced'`itb li Ythanize approximately 65% of those animals every y0r. Sony of these benefits include: • The new 4dhty will U an attractive addition to our City s Westside. As a public facility, the Ing will be "an attraction" that will draw visitors to the Westside whom may not regularly visit these neighborhoods otherwise. As these visitors and volunteers spend time in this neighborhood, they will likely seek retail and restaurant outlets in this area. This will bode well for local businesses. This is currently true for volunteers and staff who seek lunch options during (or after) their shifts. • Having a public facility that operates on a 365, 24 x 7 schedule will increase neighborhood surveillance. This will be good for neighborhood safety. • On a weekly basis, SBACC staff is responsible for monitoring several juvenile offenders as they complete their community service requirement at our facility. With a newer, safer facility, we will be better able to work with these children in a (6/10/2011) Cheryl Phipps'- 6 -8 -11 letter to redevelopment commission.pdf Page 2 way that is more constructive for the children's development and supportive of our staff. Incorporated into the new building's design is a spay /neuter clinic. We have already received commitments from local veterinarians who will be donating their time to perform free spay /neuter surgeries for our animals. This would remove the expense from potential adopters. We also hope to utilize the surgical suite to continue the already very popular Neuter Scooter service for the community. An attractive, more welcoming facility will provide us with ample opportunities to host community classes in the building. These classes can range from basic obedience classes to more advanced workshops lead by local animal health and welfare leaders such as Dr. Jocelyn Rudman, DVM. d As South Bend taxpayers, we appreciate the oversight as to requests made for TIF funding. We all need to resources.
