HPC Workshop Wednesday
August 29
Come discover the history of South Bend's Parks and Boulevards System,
designed by famed landscape architect George Kessler. Mr. Kurt Culbertson, of The
Cultural Landscapes Foundation, will present a discussion on the designer, who
also crafted the urban landscapes of Dallas, Kansas City, and Indianapolis, among
others. The presentation will take place at 6:00 p.m. at the Main Branch of the St.
Joseph County Public Library, and is made possible by a grant from the National
Council on Public History. Admission is free, and open to the public.
As one of the preeminent landscape architects in the nation, Kessler was a
leading figure of the City Beautiful movement at the beginning of the 20th century.
He identified the key natural features of a city and designed parks, landscaped
boulevards, and ornamental bridges around these features, which served as
landmarks and linked the city together. During his 40-year career, he prepared
plans for 26 park and boulevard systems, 49 parks, 46 estates & residents, and 26
schools. His projects can be found in 23 states, Mexico, and China and in 100 cities.
In South Bend, Leeper Park and the recently refurbished Michigan Street bridge
are highlights of his work.

Celebration 2007, a yearlong festival of events and programs held on the 29th of
every month to showcase all that our community has to enjoy. Locales include the
Pierre Navarre Cabin at Leeper Park, the Muessel-Ellison & Ella Morris
Greenhouse & Conservatories, Howard Park Ice Rink, St. Joseph Co. Public
Library, the College Football Hall of Fame, Northern Indiana Center for History,
South Bend Regional Museum of Art, Studebaker National Museum, City
Cemetery, Coveleski Stadium, and the Jon Hunt Plaza (in front of the Morris
Performing Arts Center). Each event has been designed to entertain residents and
visitors from ages 3 to 103. Everyone is invited!

South Bend City Celebration is a collaboration between the City of South
Bend and the Historic Preservation Commission of South Bend & St. Joseph
County. City Celebration complements the implementation of City Plan, South
Bend's new 20-year strategic plan for growth and development, by promoting and
building awareness of community assets.
