"A new way to see South Bend"
Mayor Steve Luecke and Segway of Indiana Representative Rocky Papandria joined with
members of the Common Council, Convention & Visitor's Bureau, and downtown and
East Bank Village representatives to announce that a new and exciting way to discover
the sights and sounds of South Bend and the East Race Waterway is riding into town.
Segway of Indiana will be offering one hour guided tours on the Segway PT, the world's
first self-balancing personal transporter.
The Segway PT is an easy to learn transport vehicle that quickly feels like an extension of
your own body. By shifting your weight left, right, forward or backward you
immediately glide in the precise direction you want to move. The platform of the
Segway PT is eight inches off the ground which gives the rider a clear view of their
surroundings and creates an experience worth savoring.
"We are delighted to welcome this new, one-of-a-kind business to downtown South
Bend," stated Mayor Luecke. "The East Race Waterway is one of the many distinctive
features that make our city a destination location. The Segway tours are a great way to
experience the riverfront, downtown, and to explore the array cultural and entertainment
venues throughout our arts and museum districts."

According to Papandria, "the tours will be configured to offer the adventurous and not so
adventurous a new and unique riding experience while observing and enjoying the sights
of the city." Starting at the headwaters of the East Race, the tour will follow the
waterway then loop back through the downtown business and entertainment district, glide
through the historical areas featuring the Studebaker and Oliver mansions and museums,
then back through the city past the Century Center and the College Football Hall of
Fame. The one hour guided tour will cost $45.00 per person and will require
reservations.
