SBPD offers free Summer Tennis Programs for lids and adults
Get your game on beginning June 25 through August 1, 2007, on the west side of South
Bend. The South Bend Police Department (SBPD) is once again sponsoring their
popular, yearly Summer Tennis Programs for ages 8 through adult, from "beginners" on
up. SBPD officers serve up tennis coaching and good sportsmanship lessons to anyone
from those wanting to learn or improve their game of tennis, as well as those who may
otherwise not be able to access or afford it. The equipment and lessons are provided, as
well as beverages and occasional treats.
SBPD Uniform Division Chief Darryl Boykin founded the program several years ago
and will be joined by assistant coach Sgt. Dave Herron and others on the courts at
Washington High School, Mondays —Wednesdays, during two daily sessions, from 10-
11:30 a.m. and Noon— 1:30 p.m. Sgt. Herron and other officers and volunteers will also
offer the SBPD/ Weed & Seed Tennis Program for inner city youth at the Charles Black
Youth Center on Thursdays and Fridays from 9-10 a.m.
"It's a great way for us to share our love of the game, but even better when kids (citizens)
get to see another side of a police officer...as mentors and people who care about them
and the community," explained Chief Boykins, adding that he developed the program in
1998, in response to seeing misguided youngsters while patrolling the streets.
