South Bend Weed & Seed Alliance to Present Children's
Activity Book Awards
The South Bend Weed & Seed Alliance, Inc. (SBWSA) in conjunction with the
Community Policing Committee (COP)will reward students and teachers for
participating in their second in a series of Activity Book design contests. The ceremony
will begin at 1 pm, Friday June 1, 2007, at Holy Family School with SBWSA board
members and community leaders joining in the festivities. Students will have their
winning designs printed in the activity book, and will be presented with ribbons and
certificates of appreciation for participation. Teachers of the winning classrooms will
also receive a plaque for their efforts. In addition to pizza and plaques, all winning
classes will be recognized at the bottom of each page in the book. Students and teachers
alike will receive the first copies of the book with a total distribution of 3000 copies.
The Community Policing Committee of SBWSA, led by co-chairs Lt. Richard Powers,
SBPD and Cindy DeLeon, organized the contest, choosing A Super Hero" as the theme
for this year's Activity Book. Children in grades 2-7 who attend school or church and
reside in the Weed & Seed area, were asked to design a page for the book as a class
project. More than 500 students participated in the project.
Each class of students focused on different ways in which a"super hero" can help kids do
positive things in their neighborhoods. The result was a 28 page book with various
activities to help kids to learn, such as mazes, word scrambles and coloring.
The cover of the book was designed by Luis Salinas, a student in Ms. Hamilton's art class
at Washington High School. Luis transformed the Community Policing Committee
mascot, Weedy-N-Seedy the
Centipedee into a super hero for the project, and he will receive special recognition for
his efforts.
"After the first activity book contest, we recognized we had something special as the kids
thoughtfully and enthusiastically participated, stated Mark Dollinger, coordinator for
SBWSA. "It made the students stop and think about how they can serve their community
in a positive manner and make the Weed & Seed area a better place." The first Activity
Book contest took place in April 2005, and included more than 300 participants,
producing a 24 page book.
Four award ceremonies have been scheduled to take place at the participating schools,
Navarre Intermediate Center, St. Adalbert School, and Harrison Primary Center,
culminating at Holy Family School on June 1. Residents can order a copy of the book by
calling the Weed & Seed office at 235-7619.
Weed & Seed is a federally funded strategy that seeks to "weed" out the negative
influences in the neighborhood and "seed" in the positives. The W&S area is bounded by
Arnold St. on the east, Sheridan St. on the west, Sample St. on the south and the Grand
Trunk Railroad tracks to the north.
