SOUTH BEND SUSPENDS LEAF PICKUP
FOR SNOW REMOVAL
OPERATION RELEAF:
The City of South Bend announced that it is suspending call-in loose leaf pickup as of
today, to prepare for the major snow that is predicted for tonight. The Bureau of Streets will
continue to take names and addresses for call-in pickup,however in the event of heavy snow,
some piles may be missed. If your loose leaves are not picked up this week, as an extra
precaution,please call again for pick up next week, at 235-9244.
Bagged leaf pickup will continue on a call-in basis,by calling the Division of
Environmental Services at 277-8515.
SNOW CONTROL:
Weather services are predicting 8-13 inches of snow accumulation tonight and tomorrow.
Residents are advised to be prepared by completing grocery and other shopping today and
restricting all unnecessary travel tomorrow, if the predicted snow arrives. In addition,motorists
are urged to stay off of major thoroughfares and snow routes, as these will be the first priority for
snow removal. Crews will work out from the City center into residential areas, as the weather

permits. All City departments will be working together to assist Street crews in keeping main
roads clear.
"We ask that residents assist us by preparing early, restricting unnecessary travel, and
driving safely around snow removal equipment," stated Mayor Steve Luecke. "Our crews and
equipment are ready, and we have a strategic plan for snow removal in place. We have a great
team of dedicated employees who will be working throughout the night and into tomorrow to
ensure the safety of the motoring public."
Mayor Luecke reminds residents of the following important snow safety guidelines:
$ Slow down, and allow more time for travel.
$ Keep a safe distance when driving behind snow plows in order to stay clear of the
plow=s blind spots.
$ Do not try to pass plows that are moving in and out between cars parked on the curb
line. This is very dangerous and may cause an accident.
$ Please park on driveways or in garages, away from curb lines, whenever possible.
$ Do not shovel or blow snow into the street causing a traffic obstruction.
$ Never allow children to play in snow piles along curb lines.
