Explore South Bend Tour to be Offered for Notre Dame Freshmen
With the goal of introducing first year Notre Dame students to some of the
history, cultural, and entertainment opportunities that the City of South Bend has to offer,
the City has partnered with Notre Dame Student Government to design an "Explore
South Bend Tour"that will take place on Monday, August 21st, from 12 pm to
approximately 2 pm.
While the tour has been organized by the Office of the Mayor and Notre Dame
Student Government, organizers are excited that so many different people and
organizations throughout the City have generously volunteered their time,knowledge,
and services to help make the tour a success. Transpo is providing buses to accommodate
up to 250 students free of charge. The tour buses will be led by volunteer guides from
the City of South Bend who will share their experience of living in the City with students
and point out some of the City's main attractions. Several local restaurants, including
Fiddler's Hearth, Le Peep, Siam Thai, South Bend Chocolate Cafe, and The Emporium
are donating gift certificates as incentives for students to both come on the tour and to
bring friends back into the City to taste cuisine outside the campus dining halls.
Students will have the privilege of tasting some of the best local pizza at the
conclusion of the tour, as Barnaby's, Polito's, and Bruno's have all agreed to donate pies
for a lunch to be held outside the Morris Performing Arts Center on the Jon Hunt Plaza.
The tour will depart from the University of Notre Dame's campus and due to time
constraints,the tour will focus mostly on the downtown area. The route features sites
such as Memorial Hospital, Coveleski Stadium, Studebaker Museum, Center for History,
Oliver Mansion, The College Football Hall of Fame, East Race Waterway, Century
Center, and The Morris Performing Arts Center.
Joshua Pasquesi, head of Notre Dame Student Government's Community
Relations Committee, hopes that the tour will attract lots of Notre Dame freshmen.
"We've worked hard to create an orientation to the City that we think will be useful to the
incoming freshmen. We hope that we can dispel the notion that there is not a lot going
on in South Bend by simply bringing students into the City and showing them that the
City really does have a lot to offer. From kayaking on the East Race Waterway to the
many unique local restaurants, there are a lot of great things for students to take
advantage of in South Bend during their time at Notre Dame. I think that so many
students just don't realize what is out there. I'm grateful for the collaboration between
ND Student Government, the City of South Bend,ND Downtown, and the Convention
and Visitors Bureau. Without their willingness to help,this tour would not be possible,"
Pasquesi said.
Signups for the tour will be held Saturday night at Domerfest, an annual
Freshman Orientation tradition. Pasquesi said he hopes that the "Explore South Bend
Tour"will become an annual tradition for Freshman Orientation as well.
