Studebaker Stamping Plant—The Neat Stage of Development
Mayor Stephen J. Luecke and Congressman Chris Chocola joined several South
Bend area officials and business and community representatives to kickoff demolition at
the former Studebaker Stamping Plant. The site,which includes over 1 '/2 million sq. feet
of former factory buildings on 39 acres, is the single largest building complex in the
Studebaker Corridor and in the entire city as well. The Stamping Plant was the final stop
on the Studebaker assembly line.
J& L Management Corporation, who is coordinating the demolition project, will
be mobilized on site with several large pieces of demolition equipment. J&L
Management Corporation expects to be finished in 18 months.
Following demolition and clearance, TRANSPO, the local public transit authority
will build their new headquarters and bus maintenance facility on twelve acres of the site.
FACTS
• Studebaker/Oliver Area is the single largest Brownfield Reclamation in
Indiana —4.7 million s.f.
• To date — the City has acquired and demolished 2.15 million s.f. of former
industrial buildings
• Studebaker Stamping Plant constructed in the 1920's to produce autos
• Continued as an automotive stamping operation - Allied Products from
1964-99
• At 39 acres is the single largest building complex in South Bend — 1 .4
million s.f.
• EPA provided emergency cleanup in 2004-05 due to vandalism on the site
— this saved the city $600,000 in final demolition costs ($400k —
emergency/$200k general cleanup)
• Federal Loans through HUD total $9.2 million to date
• Federal Transit assistance to help TRANSPO relocate and build new
facilities - $12 million
• Stamping Plant demolition brings the total demolition completed, since
1990, to 3.5 million s.f or % of the entire Studebaker/Oliver
Redevelopment Area.
• Project Cost— $7.9 million for demolition and clearing ( Not including
TRANSPO construction costs)
• Project Area - 39 acres — including TRANSPO
• TRANSPO's new facility - 12 acres
