Residents are urged to set out Christmas trees and rake any leftover leaves to the curb this week and to call the Bureau of Streets (235-9244)now to schedule a pickup. To date South Bend has collected 2700 Christmas trees and 70,000 yards of leaves (loose leaves only - does not include bagged leaves also collected). To schedule a pickup, please call the Bureau of Solid Waste at 277-8823. All trees, leaves, and yard waste are recycled at Organic Resources to produce high quality mulch and compost, as part of South Bend's proactive environmental stewardship. Mulch and compost will be available at Organic Resources this spring, and is free to all South Bend residents. -more- The City thanks all residents for their help to make South Bend a Clean, Safe City! Residents are reminded to please use the following guidelines when collecting material for pickup: Loose Leaf Pickup Guidelines: • Please rake leaves to the curb line but avoid raking them into the street, as this will plug the street drains, causing them to flood. • DO NOT allow children to play in leafpiles! • Do not park on top of or in front of leaf piles along curb lines. A vehicle left running while parked over leaves could create enough heat to ignite a fire. • Do not contaminate leaf piles by putting in sticks, trash, and other debris. We will not pick these piles up and it will be the property owner's responsibility to dispose of contaminated piles (we will not come back to these piles). Christmas Tree Pickup Guidelines: • All trees should be placed on the tree lawn, near the curb, by 6:00 AM. Do not place trees in the street or in alleys. • Please remove all lights, ornaments, and metal, including tree stands or nails, before discarding Christmas trees. Items left on trees can injure employees or seriously damage the tree shredding equipment, leaving it inoperable. • Artificial trees and trees including any metal, glass, or wire, will NOT be collected and will be the owner's responsibility to dispose. Yard Waste Guidelines • Yard waste and brush must be bagged or bundled (no more than 3 feet in length). • Please place yard waste at the curb and separate from trash and debris, by 6:00 a.m.. • Do not place yard waste in the alleys. - 30 -
