Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: OFFICE OF MAYOR LUECKE THURSDAY,APRIL 7, 2005 HOTEL LASALLE: BUILDING A 21ST CENTURY CITY ON THE FOUNDATION OF SOUTH BEND'S HISTORY Sharon Kendall, Executive Director of the City of South Bend Department of Community and Economic Development, announced today that the City would be expanding its search for potential developers for the Hotel LaSalle. On Friday, February 18, 2005, the South Bend Redevelopment Commission held its regular meeting at which time it received several proposals for the redevelopment of the site, none of which conformed to the bid requirements. Discussions after completing the bidding process have not culminated in a successful agreement for the sale and development of the property. The public process for the Commission's sale of property has generated publicity for the Hotel LaSalle and has given rise to interest in the site from a variety of sources. According to Kendall, "The Hotel LaSalle presents a unique opportunity to make a part of South Bend's past a building block for a 21st Century City. In keeping with the Commission's duty to promote land use in the manner that best serves the interests of the City and the City's commitment to protect the historical integrity of this community asset, the City will expand its search for qualified developers with experience in redevelopment of historic properties" For more information, contact Sharon Kendall, Executive Director of the Department of Community and Economic Development at 574-235-9375.
