Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Wednesday, June 1, 2005 WEED & SEED ALLIANCE OFFERS HELP TO SECURE HOMES As part of its' crime fighting mission, the South Bend Weed & Seed Alliance has begun a new security program for senior citizens age 62 or older who are on a limited income. The intent of the program is to help combat crime in their neighborhoods, and give residents a sense of security. The Weed & Seed program is a federally sponsored program whose purpose is to "weed out" negative and "seed in" positive influences in our neighborhoods. The Weed & Seed boundaries are Sample Street on the south, Grand Trunk Railroad tracks on the north, Arnold Street on the east and Sheridan Street on the west. Through the new security program, the South Bend Police Department's Crime Prevention Bureau will inspect homes and make recommendations on how best to secure them. Next, a contractor will install the necessary equipment to improve security in the home, at no charge to the homeowner. Funding is available to provide improved security for 50-75 homes. Security equipment items include deadbolt locks, window pins, motion lights, and answering machines. The Weed and Seed program is now in its third year of a five year strategy. In the past two years, the strategy has focused on law enforcement and an increased presence of police in neighborhoods, as well as anti-drug, anti-graffiti, and anti-gang activities and Safe Haven programs for kids. "We're extremely proud of the efforts of our residents, businesses, and City Departments who are partnering to address the concerns of our neighborhoods with an energized and creative approach," said Mayor Steve Luecke.
