Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Monday, June 27, 2005 GRAFFITI REMOVAL CREW GIVES FRESH COAT TO WEED & SEED AREA Starting today and continuing through August, the South Bend Weed and Seed Graffiti Removal Crew will be canvassing neighborhoods in targeted areas to paint over graffiti on public and private properties. The Weed and Seed Alliance has contracted with three individuals who will be working with the Police Department Crime Prevention Unit. The Weed and Seed Graffiti Removal Crew will be wearing bright orange reflective vests with identification badges. Residents of the area are asked to help in identifying graffiti locations and will be asked to sign a waiver for permission to paint over any graffiti on their property. The waiver will also allow for the crew to return three times within thirty days if needed. Residents are encouraged to help keep their neighborhoods and properties clean and free of graffiti. The Weed and Seed program is a federally sponsored program whose purpose is to "weed out" negative and "seed in" positive influences in our neighborhoods. Funding for this project is over $12,000, provided from the second year grant. The Weed and Seed boundaries are Sample Street on the south, Grand Trunk Railroad tracks on the north, Arnold Street on the east and Sheridan Street on the west. For more information, please contact Mark Dollinger, Weed &Seed Coordinator, (574) 235-7619.
