Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Monday, July 18, 2005 New Director of Wastewater Announced The City of South Bend's Department of Public Works today announced that Mr. Al Greek has been named as Director of Wastewater for the Division of Environmental Services. Greek replaces Ken Zmudzinski, and will begin his duties today Monday, July 18, 2005. Mr. Greek has more than twenty years experience in the water and wastewater fields, both in the public and private sectors. Before accepting the position with the City of South Bend, Al worked at Purdue University Utility Operations supervising maintenance and planning of wastewater systems, as well as regulatory work with the Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). He has also managed contract operations of water and wastewater distribution systems on local, state and regional levels. Al has a BA degree and operator training certifications in Class IV and Class D Wastewater Treatment, Class III Wastewater Collections System, Class WT-2 and DSL Water Distribution Systems. In 1995, he received the USEPA Region V Outstanding Operation & Maintenance Award while working as Assistant Superintendent with the City of Lafayette, Indiana Wastewater Treatment Department. Mr. Greek's experience with the implementation of an MP2 (Computerized Maintenance Management System) in Evansville, Indiana along with other computer programs, will benefit South Bend. The City of South Bend Division of Environmental Services has recently implemented the MP2 database system, to improve work order scheduling for efficient operation and maintenance of wastewater programs. As Director of Wastewater, Al will be responsible for administrative and management activities of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Operations and Maintenance Workgroups, Laboratory, Pretreatment Program, Organic Resources and Land Application Program. He will also be responsible for all permits and applicable regulatory programs. In making the announcement, Jack Dillon, Director of Environmental Services stated, "I believe Al will be an excellent addition to our team. AI's experience and expertise is a perfect fit for South Bend as we continue Mayor Steve Luecke's initiatives for improving and upgrading our environmental services and facilities."
