Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Monday, July 18, 2005 Mayor Luecke's Response to Secretary of Transportation's Letter on Time Zone Hearings in Indiana "As a result of the Indiana Legislature's and Gov. Daniel's decision to implement Daylight Savings Time in Indiana, I, along with the South Bend City Council, Mishawaka, and County Officials have gone on record that we believe this is an extremely important decision that affects the economics and quality of life of all our cities, towns, and counties. Most importantly, we believe that this very important decision should include the opinions of all of our residents. The letter from Department of Transportation Secretary Mineta reinforces the position that I have taken since the passage of SEA 127: if we want to change to Central Time, local officials will need to take a leadership role to request that change and make the arguments on why it makes sense. This is an issue that should have been decided on a statewide basis rather than left to a hodgepodge approach. Time zone border counties are left with dilemmas on which neighbor to sync with. Indiana will end up being more divided on time than before. I continue to be a strong proponent of Central Time for St. Joseph County. I believe that it makes most sense geographically, economically and for our families. I realize that many good people hold a different view, however, at the public hearing on this issue at Century Center, those who signed in were in favor of Central Time 3:1. 1 will work with St. Joseph County Commissioners to provide the necessary data and information as required by the DOT to ensure their review of our request for a local hearing. I believe that we should be able to have a hearing on this issue and look forward to the opportunity to present arguments and supporting data for Central Time."
