Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Thursday, August 18, 2005 South Bend Receives Budget Award The City of South Bend has been awarded the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2005 budget.The Department primarily responsible for this award, the Administration & Finance Department was also presented a Certificate of Recognition for Budget Presentation for their work and commitment to the highest principles of governmental budgeting. The GFOA award guidelines focused on four categories of assessment, which included how well the City's budget served as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications device. The Administration & Finance Department's documents had to receive a rating of "proficient" in all categories in order to be granted this award. The Government Finance Officers Association, with headquarters in Chicago, Illinois, is a nonprofit professional association serving 14,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. The GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards Program is the only national awards program in governmental budgeting. The awards recognize municipal government agencies who are pioneers in improving the quality of budgeting, and who serve as an example of excellence for other governments.
