HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-25-2005 Building Better Neighborhoods Building Better Neighborhoods Page 1 of 2 0 'Building a 21St Century City " Stephen I Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Date Building Better Neighborhoods The City of South Bend,has installed a new stop sign at the intersection of Lindsey and Harrison as a step toward a neighborhood traffic control plan to improve safety in the Near Northwest Neighborhood. Residents and the Near Northwest Neighborhood Association had requested a stop sign at this intersection to protect pedestrians and to help improve traffic safety. The area of concern is Lindsay Street, from Blaine to Portage,where drivers consistently tend to speed through the corridor. The new stop sign is at an intersection approximately midway through this strip. This intersectionand the neighborhood will be monitored to note improved safety and to see if more controls are needed. "The City of South Bend is working hard to build better neighborhoods by creating a safer environment for children and adults. Working together with our neighborhood associations is the best way to develop improvements and enhancements, stated Mayor Luecke. "I commend the NNN and the residents for their proactive, personal involvement in building a better neighborhood!" First District Councilman Derek Dieter stated that he is "very pleased that a stop sign has finally been installed to slow down drivers who speed up and down Lindsey Street with blatant disregard for the children and residents in the area." "Working together with residents is a priority that the Mayor and Council representatives take seriously," said Dieter. City Engineer Carl Littrell also noted that"we are assessing other intersections, in the neighborhood, including Van Buren,Vassar, Diamond,Blaine, and Cleveland streets." "Following a complete engineering review, additional stop signs may be installed, if indicated by the analysis."
