Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Thursday, September 29, 2005 Fourteen Flower Planters Installed to Beautify the Lincoln Way West Commercial Corridor The Lincoln Way West Steering Committee and its various subcommittees, in partnership with the City of South Bend's Division of Community Development and Division of Engineering, installed 14 flower planters at key Lincoln Way West Corridor intersections. The project was made possible by Mayor Stephen J. Luecke's Commercial Corridor Program and was funded through County Option Income Tax (COIT) revenues allocated to the Lincoln Way West Steering Committee by the City of South Bend as part of the Committee's annual funding request. "The City is pleased to see the Corridor Committee being fully engaged in improving Lincoln Way West," said Mayor Luecke. "We are very proud of our partnership with a group of dedicated volunteers who worked diligently to bring this beautification project to fruition."The Committee hopes to attract interest from local residents and business owners who will sponsor planter maintenance after the first year, using the standards adopted by the Committee to preserve the uniform appearance of the Corridor. The goal of the planter project is to assist in improving the image, identity, and marketability of South Bends Lincoln Way West Commercial Corridor. "We are very excited about this project, which serves as a continuation of the Committee's ongoing beautification and marketing efforts," stated Jack St. Pierre, Lincoln Way West Land Use and Marketing Subcommittee co-chair. In addition, the Committee has been instrumental in developing and implementing a tree planting program to assist Lincoln Way West residents in improving their tree lawns at no cost to residents. To date, nearly 30 new trees line the Corridor due to the efforts of the Corridor Committee and the City. Jeff Gibney, LWW Steering Committee Co-chair added, "I'd like to commend the Lincoln Way West Steering Committee and its subcommittees for their efforts to make the Corridor an even a better place. They have been instrumental in bringing this project to fruition. We hope the flower planters will be here for all to enjoy. Planter maintenance will be conducted by a local landscaping company, Shades of Green, Inc.The installed planters are made of pre-cast concrete and are 24" (height) by 42" (diameter). The planters will have a variety of annual and perennial flowers all year, including evergreens. The Lincoln Way West Corridor is one of the five gateways to the City of South Bend. It is bounded by Lafayette Boulevard on the east and Commerce Drive on the west, and includes LaSalle Square. All Corridor development is overseen by the Steering Committee, comprised of residents, Lincoln Way West business and agency representatives, and other stakeholders serving on a volunteer basis. The Steering Committee's membership and the level of involvement of its three subcommittees, Safety, Neighbors, and Land Use & Marketing, have steadily grown since the Committee's creation in 1999, making it an important partner in the Corridor's comprehensive improvement efforts. Per the 1999 Lincoln Way West Commercial Corridor Revitalization Action Plan, the committees have been actively engaged in property acquisition, demolition, and redevelopment, public safety, streetscape work, marketing, and other activities. The Lincoln Way West Corridor has received over one million dollars from the City's Commercial Corridor Program and from the sale of Lincoln Way West properties for various activities since 1999.
