Luecke announced today that the Weed and Seed Alliance (SBWSA) has received a Supplemental Grant from the Department of Justice for$100,000. SBWSA was one of only forty Weed and Seed sites selected to apply for this grant, and one of thirty-eight sites to receive the award. This grant is a part of the Public Housing Safety Initiative sponsored by the Department of Justice and Housing and Urban Development Department. Grant funds are earmarked for investigating, prosecuting and preventing violent crime and drug offenses, in the LaSalle Park Neighborhood, along with the continuance of police bicycle and foot patrols in the area. The grant allows at-risk youth residing in the LaSalle Park Homes to receive enhanced educational opportunities, life skills training workshops, and GED assistance at Weed & Seed Safe Havens and other facilities in the area. The grant also provides funding for the inclusion of a Citizens Police Academy for residents, a Logo/Bumper sticker design contest, and Emergency Response Training. As a result of the grant, instructors will be added to the After School programs at Greater Friendship Missionary Baptist Church and the Charles Black Recreation Center to accommodate newly created cultural arts and recreational programming at these two Safe Havens. The Weed and Seed program is a federally sponsored community-based program whose purpose is to "weed out" negative and "seed in" positive influences in our neighborhoods. Weed and Seed strategy embraces a multi-level approach to neighborhood restoration. The South Bend Weed and Seed program is in its third year of a five-year strategy plan.
