Ordinance No. ~ ~ ~ S -~
AN ORDINANCE OF THE COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SOUTH BEND,
INDIANA, SETTING THE ANNUAL SALARIES FOR THE SOUTH BEND COMMON
COUNCIL MEMBERS FOR CALENDAR YEAR 2008
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE AND INTENT
Legislative bodies throughout the State of Indiana are required to establish the annual
compensation for all of its elected city officers, consistent with the provisions of Indiana Code § 36-
4-7-2. Such compensation may not be "changed in the year for which it is fixed, nor may it be
reduced below the amount fixed for the previous year".
The following ordinance establishes the annual compensation for the 9-member South Bend
Common Council for 2008. In light of the uncertainty of the financial impact of the State of
Indiana's Circuit Breaker law, amulti-year salary ordinance would not be in the best interest of the
City.

Re: 2008 Salary Ordinance for the South Bend Common Council
Derek D. Dieter Dear Council Members:
First District
Charlotte D. Pfeifer The attached proposed ordinance would establish the salaries of the Common
Second District Council Members for calendar year 2008.
Roland "Randy" Kelly The ordinance recommends a 2% increase over the current salary amount.
Third District You will recall that this year the Council salaries reflect a $291 increase over
the 2006 salary amount. If approved the total dollar increase will be $338.
Ann Puzzello
Fourth District In light of the uncertainty of the financial impact of the Circuit Breaker state
law, amulti-year salary ordinance is not feasible at this time.
David Varner
Fifth District I seek your support. Thank you.
