Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Thursday, October 20, 2005 South Bend Water Works Receives Water Fluoridation Quality Awards The City of South Bend received two water fluoridation quality certificate awards, presented by the United States Department of Health & Human Services Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. South Bend was recognized for doing an outstanding job of maintaining optimal fluoride levels and promoting good oral health for all 12 months of 2002 and 2003. The Indiana State Department of Health, Division of Oral Health monitors and documents the fluoride levels at water treatment facilities throughout the State. The department officially commended Water Works officials for successfully maintaining consistent fluoride levels and meeting the state's fluoridation monitoring requirements. The Center for Disease Control supports and acknowledges programs and water facilities who are working to keep their water supplies safe for public use. Fluoridation of community water systems has also been recognized as one of the top 10 public health achievements in the 20th Century.
