Luecke, Mayor RELEASE FROM: FOR RELEASE: Office of the Mayor Friday, October 21, 2005 City Investment in Neighborhoods Reaches $350,000 Now in its' 7th year, Mayor Stephen Luecke's "Clean City" initiative, the Building Blocks Grant (BBG) program has provided more than $350,000 to residents, non-profit organizations, civic groups, neighborhood associations, and churches within the City of South Bend, for beautification of their front lawns and enhancement of their neighborhood. Over 2,000 applications for assistance have been received and the program has assisted hundreds of residents and non-profit organizations in landscaping their properties. This year, the BBG program was allocated $80,000, and 520 residential, church and non-profit organizations took advantage of this opportunity to landscape their front yards and make their neighborhoods more attractive. Of these applicants, 445 received $125 in assistance, totaling $55,625. The remainder of awards were for non-matching grants that ranged from$150 up to $2,500. The continued growth and success of the Building Blocks Grant program is the result of the partnership between residents and the City and the commitment to work together to keep South Bend beautiful. The next opportunity to participate in this program that encourages neighborhood community building and enhancement will be in 2006.Applications will be available at the end of March.
