Spring Releaf & yard waste pick-up begins in South Bend
SPRING RELEAF
Spring ReLeafbeginning
The City of South Bend will offer the annual program
Monday, April 4 and running through April 15.The program will be offered, on a call-in
basis only.
The Division of Streets is working on general clean-up, around the city, especially given
the after effects of the major winter snow storms this year. Crews are sweeping and cleaning
main arterial streets and will move on to residential areas next. “This is also a good time to
pickup leaves that were not able to be collected at the end of the season, last year,” stated Sam
Hensley, Director of Streets. “We would like to complete the Spring ReLeaf program, which is
an important part of South Bend’s Clean City effort, as we also work to clean up the sand and
brine remaining from the winter storms so that we have a clean, bright city as the spring season
arrives.”
Mayor Luecke also noted that “the call-in pickup is the most efficient means for leaf
pickup and helps to conserve fuel and keep down costs for labor and vehicle maintenance.”
“South Bend residents did a great job with leaf clean-up last year and we were able to recycle all
of these leaves and avoid adding them to area landfills thanks to our program at Organic
Resources.”

LOOSE- LEAF PICKUP
Please follow these guidelines for loose-leaf pickup:
Do not allow children to play in leaf piles near the curb.
Do not contaminate leaf piles with debris (sticks, trash, etc.). Street crews are
unable to collect these piles with vacuum trucks. It will be the owner’s
responsibility to dispose of contaminated piles.
Do not rake leaves into the street. Avoid parking in front of leaf piles to allow
access for pick-up.
There will be no loose leaf pick-up in alleys.
Once leaves are raked to the curb, call 235-9244 to schedule pickup.
NOTE:
Residents are reminded that in order to protect our air quality, burning of leaves
is completely prohibited in the City of South Bend and is a violation of City ordinance.
YARD WASTE PICKUP
Bagged leaves and bagged or bundled yard waste pickup is also available, on a call-in
basis, through the Division of Solid Waste until April 14. The automatic program (no call-in
necessary) will begin April 18. Residents are also reminded to be sure that all yard waste -
leaves, branches, etc. is clear of any animal waste. Animal waste will contaminate the recycling
of leaves and yard waste for production of organic mulch. All yard waste must be bagged or
bundled and placed at the curb, there is no alley pickup for yard waste. Please call the Bureau of
Solid Waste at 277-8823 to schedule a pickup.
Please follow these guidelines for the Yard Waste Program:
Please place yard waste at curbside in bags or containers, by 6:00 a.m. on your
regularly scheduled day for trash pickup, and separate it from and trash and
debris.
Yard waste and brush must be bagged or bundled (no more than 4 feet in
length or 1 foot above edge of container).
Please use suitable containers (30 gallon trash container or smaller) - do not
place yard waste in City automated trash containers or the Borden recycling
containers.
Do not place yard waste in the alley.
