Meeting held in the Board of Safety office at 4 p.m. all members
present except Mr. Engeldrum.
Minutes of last meeting .approved following their reading and
signed by Mr. Reeder. Motion prevailed that a special meeting be
held at 10 a.m., November 27 to open bids for Fire Hose. Clerk
instructed to issue the call.
Requisitions for Fire Department were approved and payroll bill
signed.
Electrical Department,
Requisitions Nos. 001558 —9 and 60 were approved
Report received.
Payroll affidavits signed.
Weights and Measures..
Bills for payroll and use of car signed.
Report placed on filed
Police Department.
Requisitions signed and payroll bills approved.
Applications of L. R. Richardson and Joseph Miler approved and
ordered placed on file.
Letters ordered sent to Taxi Companies that petitions for stands
will be considered at next regular meeting. B lanks ordered prepared
to complt with new Taxi ordinance.
Mrs. Evans report ordered placed on file.
Patrolman Carl Wesolek sent the following communication to
Chief Hatt and members of the board. " I hereby resign as -a member
of the South Bend Police Department to become effective this date."
The note signed by Carl Wesolek was dated Nove 23, 1929. Charges
were filed by Chief ofmPolice James J. Hatt as of November 21, 1929
charging Officer Wesolek with intoxication. Charges a copy of which
were delivered to Pffieer Wesolek were ordered placed on file. On
motion of Dr. Johnston the resignition of Officer Wesolek was
gdaegted and ordered placed on file.
The following charges against Sergt. Lewis Mielke were then
read by Mr. Reeder and the trial ordered to proceed.

Gentlemen:
I herewith submitt t,'e following charges against Louis
H. 1!�eilke, Sergt. of Police.
That said Officer 11..eilke on the 6th. day of November,1929
was guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer in that on the riorning
of said date, he while under the influence of intoxicating liquor
improperly interfered with the duties of L.B.Stacy a special Officer
dup�y a >pointed, and acting for the Robertson Bros. Company of this -
City; that said Officer L-- eilke; in the vicinity of the Robertson
:giros ;tore accosted said Special Officer Stacy, and without provocatiol
accused hit of impersonating an officer, indulged in uncalled for
and abusei.ve language, tore his badge from his person, and took him i

Statements of the complaining witnesses were turned
over to City Attorney Iden S. Romig who acted for the Board as
prosecutor. Louis M. Hammersehmidt appeared for Sergt. Mielke
Evidence to support the above charges was presented by Mr.
Stacey and Mr. Rightley.
The witnesses subponeaed by the Board of Safety wlio

in the order named: G. A.Farabaugh, Sergt. Mielke, Joe
Ros nberg, Mrs. Ipes, Harry Wielke, Thomas Moss, Mr. Lewis,

Mr. Atwood, Ray Winters, Paul Polinski, Frank Wendowski,

After receiving the evidence Mr. Romig moved that
the Board adjourn until 10 a.m. November 26th. and that the
final arguments be heard at _that time. Motion made by
Dr. Johnston that the Board adjourn at 7:15 p.m. Report of

Adjourned meeting held at Board of Safety office
Tue day morning at 10 a.m. November 26th. Mr. Reeder and I ohs
to were present. Mr. Romig made his plea to the Board asking
th t the evidence presented by Mr. Stacey and Mr. Ri ede
be onsidered by the Board and Sergt. Mielke be suspended.
Mr. Hammerschmidt then replied and asked that the Board
retain Sergt. Mielke. Mr. Romig made a final plea. After
deliberation Mr. Reeder announce that Sergt. Mielke was
fow,cl guilty of conduct unbecoming an officer and for the

the charges were filed and the motion had the sanction of
Mr. Johnston. -
