MEETING February 17,
1936
Regular meeting of the Board of
Public Safety was held on Monday,
February 17, 1936, at 9:00 A. M. All
members were present.
Minutes of previous meeting were
read and approved.
Requisitions numbers 08879 to 08885
were approved, also
claims

FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present:
Matters pertaining to the Fire Department were discussed and the
Chief reported that on February 11th a tractor and trailer belonging
to the Western Michigan Transportation Company of 317 East LaSalle
Avenue was being weighed on the South Bend public scales and that the.
trailer buckled. The driver, I in jacking up the load, threw all. the
weight on one end of the scales and broke a part of same which is now
being ordered for repair. The Board gave instructions to notify these
people that they will be held responsible for the cost of repairs and
the Secretary wrote them accordingly.
The Board took UP with the Chief claim of Epworth Hospital for
$66.75 for services rendered to Joseph Kujawski, who was injured at
the recent Green fire, and in accordance with former agreement asked
the payment with the understanding that the injured party his own
doctor bill.
POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Lane present:
The matter of William Ortman and his payments to his family was
discuss I ed with him, in accordance with Court Order and the Controller
is instructed to deduct from his pay, beginning with February 15th,
three payments of §31.25 each to be paid to his wife, thereafter ten
payments of $30*00 each of which 425.00 is to be paid:to,his wife and
45.00 to William A. Bertsch, thereafter until further change or
modification made by the Court $25.00 to be paid to his wife. Officer
Ortman signed this agreement and the matter was reported to the
Controller.
The Chief brought up the question of telephone service and stated
he was not satisfied whereupon the Board authorized the installation
of three direct lines to the Police Department segregating the depart-
ment from the switchboard, one such line already being installed.
A revised traffic violation ticket was submitted for approval
and it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that this be adopted
and that the same be ordered in duplicate.
The Secretary brought up the ' matter that was referred to him by
George Hahn, requesting that the Street Car be asked to
display on their cars different colored lights to indicate the route
these cars travel. The Secretary has written the Street Car Company
asking for their re-action.
Official police bonds were approved in favor of the following
employees of the American District Telegraph Company supporting their
appointment as special police officers for one year: Norman F. Wiese,
Charles L. Anderson, Ivor Strombeck and George A. Brown.
.Police application of Boyd Joseph Nusbaum was received and
ordered placed on file.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present:
Mx. qualls submitted a report of fire alarms handled during the
month of January, showing a comparative record for same month for the
last ten years. Report is on file in the office of the Board.
