The Chief reported that; he felt that the telephone service after
five o'clock in the evening was not such as the Police Department should
have for adequate and efficient service'to'the public and suggested that
all telephonep,in this department be independent lines. The matter was
referred to the Clerk and to the Chief for further investigation.

SPECIAL MEETING January 29, 1936
- Special meeting of the Board of Public Safaty,was held on January 29,
1936 at 10:00 A; M. All members were present.
The Board considered the advisability of sending representatives on
a Safety Expedition isponsored by the Studebaker Corporation: This
Expedition is to leave South Bend on Monday, February 3rd and to visit
the cities of Evanston Illinois; Milwaukee, Wisconson; Louisvi,'Ile,
Kentucky; Cincinnati. Cleveland and Toledo t , Ohio to he safety

problem. The Board authorized the expenditure of 50.00 for expenses and
the Chief of Police was instructed to use this,as judicially as possible
and;use his own judgment as to whether to send one or two men and to make
the seledtion of th6 men himself.

The Chief reported that he had carefully investigated 11
ThoiA&S, an applicant for position on the Police Department, and recom-
mended him for use in the service. The Board approved the appointment
to effect February ist and the applicant to be on probation for six
months', subject to assignment by the Chief of' Police.
The Chief was also requested to report on all Officers on probation
each month until probation period has expired.
