Regular'meeting of the Board'of Public Safety was held Monday,
October 14, 1935 at 8:45 A. M. All members were present.
Minutes of previous meeting were read and approved.
Requisitions bearing numbers 08665 to 08676, inclusive, Were
approved.` Claims in the amount of $231:49, from the following
suppliers, were approved and ordered paid.

FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present:
The Chief brought up the matter which was referred to in the previous
Meeting in reference to repair of Seagrave Aerial Truck on which the .
cost of repair was submitted by the Studebaker Corporation in the amount
of $2,480.00. This "would be in the nature of a new Studebaker Tractor to
be used with the hook and ladder equipment now at the Central Station.
After fully considering the matter, it was regularly moved, seconded and
carried that the City Attorney -draw up an Ordinance to be introduced into
the Council at its meeting tonight, appropriating the above sum from the
General Fund for this purpose.
It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Secretary be
ti instructed to draw.u.p a Resolution to be submitted to the family of
Earl J. McGinn, City Fireman, whose funeral was today. The following
Resolution was communicated to the family:
WHEREAS Almighty Gad, in His all knowing Providence, has seen fit
to remove from the ranks of the Fire Department Earl J. McGinn and
WHEREAS the said Earl J. McGinn has distinguished himself, his
family and his City by noteworthy service as a member of the Fire
Department; and said service being greatly appreciated by all the
residents of said City and City Officials, it is the will of this Board
that an expression of sympathy and of the high esteem held by this Board
of the said Earl J. McGinn be transmitted to his widow and that a copy
of this Resolution be spread on the Minutes of this Board.

The matter of purchase of fire hose was considered and it was
decided to purchase the following for immediate delivery:
250 ft., 22 11, D.J. Fire Hose- _Arcade, 95¢ _per ft., from the American
LaFrance & Foamite Industries
300 ft., 22", Boston D.J. Fire Hose, 95¢ per f t., from Ted Nicar,
representing The General Fire Hose Corporation
250 ft., 22 ", Viking D. J. Fire Hose, 95¢ per ft., from the Manhattan
Rubber Manufacturing Company
300 f t., 12 ", Underwriter's D.J. Fire Hose, 59¢ per ft., from the
Hamilton Rubber Manufacturing Company.
All of,the fire hose to be shipped in 50 Pt. lengths, coupled
with Elkhart Slidewell Couplings and stamped,S.B.F.D,.and the date.
The Chief reported that he had taken up with the Secretary of
the-Board of Health the matter of the use of tannic acid for burns,
as outlined in the previous meeting, and that he had received his
recommendation for its use. The Board authorized the chief to purchase
one outfit at this time and if found entirely satisfactory to purchase
an additional outfit later in the year.
The Chief brought up the question of blankets used in the various
.hose houses and stated he would like to have the name South Bend Fire,
.Department woven into the blankets - on new blankets as well as some
.recently purchased blankets that had not . been distributed. The Board
instructed him to ascertain the cost of this for later consideration.
The Chief brought in a report, as requested by the Council at a
previous meeting, in reference to recommendations made by the National
Board of Underwriters in the 1932 Report, as Councilman William S. James
had requested information as`to which of these recommendations had been
complied with. The report is on file in the office of the Board of
Public Safety together with a,report on the recommendations by the Water
Department and the Electrical Department.
.POLICE DEPARTMENT - Chief Lane present:
-Various matters pertaining to the Police Department were discussed,
but there being nothing of.,importance, no action was taken. The Chief,
however, stated that he would report to.the Board at the next meeting
the'ehanges in the personnel of the Department that. would be made in
.view of the change recently made in the Assistant_ Chief of,Police
Police application of Casimir Dembinski was received and ordered
placed on file.
