MEETING August 26, 1935
Regular meeting of the Board of Public.Safety was held on Monday,
August 26th, 1935 at 9 :15 A. M. All members were present.
Minutes of meeting of August 19th were read and approved.
Requisitions bearin numbers 08608 to 08613, inclusive, were approved.
Claims in the amount of $336.51, from the following suppliers, were approved
and ordered paid, also payroll for the last half of August amounting to

Matters pertaining to his department were discussed but no actions were
taken
A request from Joseph Vogel, Manager of the River Park Theatre, for
overhead traffic signal at intersection of Mishawaka Avenue and 30th Street
was presented to the Board, and as this same subject had been brought up
to the Board several months ago by other parties and no action was taken,
this matter was again ordered placed on file. The following letter was
written to Mr. Joseph Vogel:
"Your letter of August 19th was brought to the attention of the Board
of Public Safety at its regular meeting this morning.
A request for overhead traffic signal at the intersection of
Mishawaka Avenue and 30th Street was presented to the Board several months
ago by other parties and at that time the Board considered there was not
sufficient hazard to warrant placing such a signal. It was suggested that
at the times when your patrons are most often crossing the street that the
police officer in River Park be called to.assist you.
Regret that we cannot comply with your request."
POLICE DEPARTMENT - Chief Lane present:
Matters in general were discussed with the Chief regarding his depart-
ment, and particularly the street car strike. The Police Chief advised that
he had not been called in on this matter by interested parties and that he
was disposed to remain neutral until the matter of strike took more serious
proportions.
The Chief reported that his department was now proceeding to stencil
signals on streets where approach is made to overhead stop lights, calling
attention to the light from two hundred to five hundred feet before it is
reached. The Board approved this procedure.
A letter from the Mayor was read requesting that a survey be made as
to the violation of the law where punch boards, slot machines and other
games of chance are being operated with the view of prohibiting those that
do not come within the law. This matter was fully discussed with the
Chief and it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that he be instruct-
ed to clean up all violations of this kind.
A request from L. F. Bowers, 140 East North Shore Drive for a new
boulevard sign at North Shore Drive and Leeper Avenue was rejected and
Mr. Bowers was accordingly notified.
A communication from Mrs. George Heintzelman to the City Council having
been referred to the Board of Public Safety was read in reference to a tax
on cats which was rejected.

Special officer's commission requested by James Beagles,who conducts
a vegetable garden in the south end of the City along with others, was
postponed pending further investigation by the Chief of Police.
I Request of Walter Michalski, 422 Pine Street for special officer's
commission to be used at the Hungarian Village was rejected by the Board.
The matter of special police officer's commission for Walter S. Osler,
2211 North Notre Dame Avenue was discussed and the Board decided not to
issue such commission.

The question of sale of motor boat belonging to the City, which has
been put in order and is now reposing in the boat house in Leeper Park,
was discussed and it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the
sale of this boat be withheld until spring when a better opportunity will
be had to obtain a higher price.
Police applications were received from Edward Charles Tucker and
William M. Johnson and ordered placed on file.
The meeting adjourned at 11:00 A. M.
