HomeMy WebLinkAbout08/05/1935 Board of Public Safety MinutesAUGUST 5, 1935 -Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held at 10:00 A. M. Monday, August 5,- 1935. All members were present. Minutes of meeting of July 29th were read and approved. Requisitions bearin i Numbers 08691 to 08602, inclusive, were approved. R.,3, Box 28, North Sheridan Road, appeared before the Board and complained with reference to one of his neighbors operating a Dog Kennel, claiming that not only were the surroundings un- healthy and obnoxious but that they made a practice of blockading the alley with their automobiles which leads to Mr. King's garage, He requested investigation and action. The matter was carefully considered and the Secretary was instructed to get in touch with the Health Department, Building Department and Police Department for investigation and report at the next Board Meeting. FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: Matters in general pertaining to the Fire Department were discussed and Chief Freeh requested the privilege of purchasing at this time some li and,- -J 2 inoh'1ose, which is needed at several Fire Stations, also 100 ft. of 1 inch booster hose. A discussion followed and Mr. Anderson suggested that if the Chief could postpone this purchase for a matter of a month or a month and a half without jeopardizing fire protection to the City that: the purchase be postponed because there may be some need of transferring the funds for some other purpose where it may be more seriously needed. The Chief agreed to do this, but was given the privilege of purchasing 100 ft. of 1 inch booster hose at a cost of approximately $50.00. The matter of purchase of pumping engine was discussed fully with the Chief, after which it was regularly moved, seconded and carried that, acting_ upon the recommendation of the committee of Engineers appointed by the Mayor, contract be submitted to the Common Council for the purchase of a Pirsch Pumping Engine for the sum of $11,250.00. Their bid being based upon supplying one of their Model 16 H, which was submitted on June 24, 19350' The Chief again brought up the matter of repair to truck No. 1, on which the estimated expense is approximately $3,882.00. After a full discussion, the matter was referred to the City Controller to investigate how necessary funds could be secured. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present: Matters pertaining to the Electrical Department were discussed, but there being nothing of importance no action was taken. POLICE DEPARTMENT Chief Lane present: Matters pertaining to the Police Department were discussed, but other important matters having the attention of the Board a complete report of the Chief was not obtained but was postponed until the next regular meeting. A communication from the Traffic Survey Committee, following up a request that stop signs at Twykenham Drive and Wayne Street be reversed, was presented to the Board with their recommendation that after a careful study..'of the location stop signs,,if they were necessary at all, should be rev-6rqe,4;-. It was recommended that they be eliminated entirely from the intersEo.iion, as visibility is good in all directions. The Board gave the Secre'ary instructions to notify the Police Department to remove these signs. A communication from the Traffic Survey-Department was read in reference to a request made by John McCormick of 1202 Queen Street that stop signs be placed on Kessler Boulevard at Queen Street. The Survey Committee reported that after a careful investigation of the inter- section that stop signs would not serve the purpose and that it is not a matter of cross traffic but of children playing in the intersection. They suggested that this be eliminated through cooperation with the Police Department. Police applications were received from the following and ordered placed on file: Don F. Richardson, Pennell Boswell, colored, and Glenn Dennis Madison, colored. Special police commission was issued to George 0. Thurn. The Secretary brought to the attention of,the Board special police commis- sions issued from time to time over a-period of years on which special badges had been issued and which were recalled by the Board some time ago. After several communications with no response, the Secretary was instructed to refer the matter to the°Police Department to have Chief detail Officers to demand return of badges. Special officers commission was issued to Bert Nighswander under date of May 22, 1935, but Mr. Nighswander never came in to be sworn in or to receive his commission. The Board instructed the Secretary to recall the badge issued to him. The meeting adjourned at 11:30 A. M. Chairman ATTEST: Clerk
