Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday, July 22,
1935 at 9:00 A. M. All members were present.,.
Minutes of meeting of July 15th were read and approved.
Requisitions bearin numbers 08.567 to 08577, inclusive,.were approved.
Claims in the amount of 1573.90, from the following suppliers, were approved
and ordered paid, also payroll of the Fire Department amounting to 490386.66
was approved.

Representatives of the Hospitals appeared before the Board in-response
to a,.letter directed to them with reference to their, claims agaimst,the
City of South Bend for services rendered City employees who are injured in
the line of duty, there having been some understanding that the Hospitals
were -to render this service gratis, due to their participation in the tax
levy which at the: present time is on the basis of, three cents. The presen-
tation of their views in the matter was offered by Drs. Sensenich,-Bertling
and Clark and Mr. Vitus Jones. The discussion was entirely from a sta_nd.- .
point of determining the extent of the responsibility, if any, of the:
Hospitals in'connection with this work. After listening to their views,
the Board invited them to meet with the Common Council the evening of
Monday, July 22nd,.at which time an Ordinance was to be introduced to be
used in paying these claims, if correct.
Sheriff Roy Wolfe was present to discuss with the Board and Chief of
Police Lane the matter of ambulance service outside the City Limits. After
a full discussion of the .matter, it was decided that the Sheriff would not
call upon the City for service excepting in cases of emergency where he
could not secure services of independent ambulance owners and.in such
emergencies the Police Department would respond to his request.'
_ POLICE DEPARTMENT— Chief.Lane present:
The Chief reported on a trip to the Convention at Atlantic City from
which he has just returned stated that on his way to Atlantic.City he
stopped at all important cities and discussed with the Chiefs of Police or
other officials the various phases of police work and exchanged ideas with
them along this line. The Chief also reported on some of the activities
of the Convention but was interrupted by a call from the Mayor who asked
for a personal conference with him -and Chief Lane's report was deferred
until a later meeting. -
Communication from the Mayor was received calling attention.to a
motor boat which.is the property of the City of South Bend and is now
stored in the boathouse at Leeper Park. He recommended that mechanics put
this boat in running odder and that the Board of Public Safety advertise
it for sale. The Secretary was instructed to investigate the cost of doing
this work and to report at the next meeting.
Applications for Police Department were received from the following
and ordered placed on file: Grifford Ecklund, Bernard V. Strike, Cleon C.
Fox and Lawrence R. Stein, colored.
FIRE DEPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present:
Matters pertaining to the Fire Department were discussed, but owing to
the fact that no matters of importance were brought up, no action was taken."
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present:
Mr. Qualls presented his June report of fire alarms handled in compar-
ison with activities of.previous months and years. This report is on file -
in the office of the Board of Public. Safety.
Responding to the Board's request at the last meeting to make a report

of the expense of changing overhead stoplight at Cushing Street and Lincoln
Way West to the same system installed recently at Lincoln Way West and
William`Street, Mr. Qualls advised that the cost of this change would.be
approximately 420.00, much less,than the former change, in view of the fact

that we have on hand the equipment with the exception of sufficient wire
and an extra pole. Mr. Qualls, by regular motion seconded and carried,
was instructed to•proceed with this work.
Final budget appropriations for the Police Department, Fire Depart -
ment,_Electrical Department, Dog Pound and Department of Weights and
Measures were analyzed by the Board of Public Safety, approved and
submitted to the Mayor.
