Regular meeting of the Board of Public 'Safety was held on Monday, July 15

1935 at 9:00 A. M. All members- were.present.
The minutes-of. regular meeting of Tuly.8th were read and approved.
Claims in the amount of $490.09, from the following suppliers, were
approved and ordered paid: Requisitions No. 08559 to 0856.61 incl. gore approved.

FIRE DEPARTMENT: Chief Freeh present:
The Chief brought up the question of making necessary repairs to fire
truck at No. 2 Hose House, which would cost approximately 4200.00. It was
regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Chief be authorized to make
} these repairs since the expense is fully covered by appropriation for the
present year.
The Chief, in a letter to the Board, informed them that with a dismantel
ment of the former No. 3 pumper, which has been reduced to junk, the only
salvage remaining is four 9OOx24x9" Firestone tires and six automobile batteries .
which can be used as trade -in on new equipment. No action was taken as to
disposal of this material.
The Chief, in a former letter, informed the Board-of the-return of the
police boat "to the Police. Department in the following communication:

Gentlemen: -
In compliance with your decision regarding the return of the police
boat to the Police Department on July 15, 1935 I herewith give you a complete
and itemized account of what this rescue boat is composed of, and that which
will be returned to the Police Department on the above date, as has been
stated specifically in this order..
1 - Metal Boat (First class condition)
1 Trailer
2 Sets of Oars
1 - 8 ft. grab hook
1- 6ft. " »
1 - 5 ft.
1 - 5 gallon.-gasolene container
1 - Johnson Outboard Motor
1 3 in. rope

1 - Suit Case (kit.of tools, etc.)

The Chief requested permission to attend a convention of Central Western
-
Fire Chiefs at Lansing, Michigan, July 16, 17th and 18th, at his own expense.
The Board granted him permission to do so.

The Chief brought before the Board a letter from the Seagrave Corporation,
enclosin proposal for the re- building of Seagrave Aerial Tractor X16235 at a
cost of 3,882.00. No action was taken in regard to this, pending decision as
to the purchase of new 1000 gallon Pumper for the Fire Department.

F,],E( . ;TRICAL 1. DEPARtkEkt - Mr. Qualls present:
The traffic system in general was discussed since recent change in the
regulation of traffic through the downtown district.
The question-was-also brought up as to changing the overhead signal at
Cushing Street and Lincoln Way West to conform with the system adopted at
William Street and Lincoln Way West. Mr. Qualls was instructed to report to
the Board at its meeting as to the cost of making this change.
-POLICE DEPARTMENT - Assistant Chief Hamilton present:
Matters pertaining to the Police Department were discussed with Assistant
Chief Hamilton, particularly the question of claims made by the two'hospitals
for services rendered to City employees who are hurt in various ways in the
line of duty. It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Secretary
bE instructed to notify the Hospitals that-, in accordance with its under-
slanding, the Hospitals were awarded a part of the tax levy and that, in view
ol this, such services as are necessary to be rendered to City employees were
tc be furnished gratis. The Secretary has written them as follows, giving
tlem an opportunity to meet with the Board at their convenience on Monday
m4rning:
"Since claims have recently been presented by you for services
rendered City employees, account of accidents while on duty, a discussion has
a3'isen in the Board of Public Safety (Works) as to whether or not such a
claim is . proper. There seems to be some contention that, in view of the fact
that a certain part of the tax levy is paid to the Hospitals, services to
City employees are understood to be rendered gratis.
If this is not your understanding of the matter, the Board will be
very glad to discuss this with you at one of its meetings which are regularly
held on Monday mornings.
�In the meantime, no action will be taken in reference to your
claims."
The matter of making calls for ambulance service beyond the city limits
w discussed with the Assistant Chief and it was decided that the City could
not legally and should not be called upon to make these calls, and that it
WLS the duty of the Sheriff of the County to do so. The City Attorney was
i structed to notify the Sheriff that after September first the City would
r fuse to make calls into the County for ambulance or fire truck service,
w ich would give him ample time to make preparations to take care of these
cills after that date.
Special commission of Clifford Cripe was cancelled by the Board and
Cripe was so notified.
The meeting adjourned at 11:15 A. M.
