HomeMy WebLinkAbout07/08/1935 Board of Public Safety MinutesMEETING July 8, 1935 Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held on Monday, July 81 1935 at 8 :45 A. M. All members were present. Minutes of regular meeting of July lst were read and approved. Requisitions bearing numbers 08538 -to 08558, inclusive, were approved by the Board. Claims in the amount of 746.08 were presented and approved. Also payroll in the amount of $16,759.64. Claims are represented by the following suppliers: Indiana &c Mich. Co. 1.50 Gafill Oil Company 14.95 Business Systems Inc. 11.00 Gafill Oil Company 34.20 Office Engineers, Inc. 3.25 Gafill Oil - Company 20.26 A letter from the General Fire Truck.Corporation of St. Louis, dated July 6th, to City Attorney Edwin W. Hunter, also the telegram of July 7th reading as follows, were received: "Since,dis ussing apparatus with Engineers have obtained factory 0. N. to proVe'd centrif4ai }dump as1 - preferred also extra booster and priming pump giving us highest mechanical rating of all bidders at considerable price saving. - "Hope we have your support. McGraw These communications were ordered placed on file and were ordered commun- icated to Mr. James., FIRE.�EPARTMENT - Chief Freeh present: `Vatters in general pertaining to his department were discussed. , In reference to the transfer of the police boat, the Chief was instructed to confer with the Chief of Police with reference to equipment rhich might be required in the operation of the police boat and to supply the Police Department with such equipment when necessary. Application for position as fireman was received from Frank Papezynski. CTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present: Mr. L. Salisbury,of 614 forest Avenue, Mishawaka, was present and requested 1,h. e, privilege of repainting the antennan- at the Alarm Station and removing the alupminum paint, which was referred to Mr. Qualls for investigation and further Mr. Qualls, in a communication to the Board, stated his department is now .reparing traffic signals for the Western Avenue and Walnut Street intersection 57 miler: the Railroad and that the cost for signal 'operation would be $13.80 ©r a total of $55.20 per year for the intersection to be paid from the street light"ng fund. This met with the approval of the Board and Mr. 3nstrueted Qualls was to proceed. .POLICE DEPARTMENT Assistant Chief Hamilton present: Matters pertaining to the Police Department were discussed and the Assistant Chief made monthly report for June, showing number of crimes committed ''or the month of sixty -six and the number of arrests made one hundred forty six. ➢etsl of this report is on file in the office of the Board of Public Safety. The Assistant Chief presented a report from the Superintendent of the dater Works giving information regarding automobiles now being operated by the Police Department and being kept in repair by the Water "Works and indi- ` eating the cars that should be replaced with new cars during the year 1936. :'The following is a list of these cars: Make Number Model Speedometer Reading Rockne 2 1932 65 43924 Rockne 4 1932 65 70964 Rockne 5 1932 65- 65893 Studebaker 8 1931 54 84925 Ford 11 1932 B 70012 Ford 13 1.932 B 64760 Ford 12 1930 A 56984 210,9t,, ,, he Assistant Chief also informed the Board that in making up the budget or the year 1936 it should seriously consider supplying the Police Depart - ent with four additional motorcycles which were very much needed. The matter of creating a Captaincy for the 4 to 12 P. M. shift was iscussed with Assistant Chief Hamilton and, as there is no allowance made or this office during the year 1935, the matter of placing a Sergeant at he position of Captain at Sergeant's pay from now until January 1, 1936 as discussed and it was then regularly moved, seconded and carried that ergeant William Diedrich be advanced to Captaincy under these conditions ubject to further consideration of pay in the 1936 appropriation. The matter of vacation of Scott Street property of the Fitterling rucking Company and subsidiaries was discussed with the Assistant Chief nd the Secretary was instructed to look up the previous Minutes and etermine the length of time this Trucking Company was given to vacate and o communicate with the Chief of Police the instructions to see that the ishes of the Board are fully carried out. A communication from Mr. John B. Campbell was received calling attention o dangerous intersection at Hudson .Avenue and Riverside Drive. The matter as referred to the Engineering Department and the Chicago Motor Club who re now conducting a survey. T: lerk a Chairman
