Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held June 24th at
8:30 A. M. All members were present.
Minutes of meeting of June 17th were read and approved.'
Requisitions bearin numbers 08525 to 08529, inclusive, were approved.
Claims in the amount of 71.58 from the following suppliers were approvedand
ordered paid. Payroll for the last half of June was also approved and ordered
paid amounting to $16,926.60.

South Bend Tribune, under dates of June 12th and 19th, bids were-presented and

The Board informed bidders, who were all present, that they will take, this
matter under advisement and inform them of a time when their representatives
could meet with engineers selected by the Mayor to go over the details of their

construction and determine upon the pumper most suited for the City's needs.
The matter of medical and surgical expenses in the Fire Department were
discussed with the Chief who outlined his understanding of the duties of the
City Surgeon in connection with sick firemen and those who meet 4ith accidents
while on duty. His understanding of previous custom, he said, was that in the
-case of sick firemen, Police Surgeon called upon them as soon as the matter was
reported to him and that the patient paid all the expenses of his illness and,
that his last duty was to make..a final call before the fireman returned to wo ,•;
In the case of accidents, he stated his understanding was that the City was
,. liable for the expense involved.
ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT Mr. Qualls present:
Matters pertaining to the operation of his department were discussed and,
' due to an accident which occurred during the. last week at Lincoln Gay West and
William Street, it was decided to paint a warning on the Street at this inter-
? section calling attention to traffic signals. The Chief of Police was
instructed by the Secretary to carry out these instructions.

The matter of putting a new roof on the Alarm Station was brought up.
e Secretary reported that he had not received,quotati"ons"from Roofers
cepting the John Beyrer & Sons Roofing Company. He was.instructed to get
touch again with these Roofers to see that their bids are brought in at
ce.
OLIOE DEPARTMENT - Chief Lane present:
As the Chief was.making a trip to Fort Wayne on this day with the Mayor,
atters pertaining to his department were not fully discussed.
A petition from residents in the 900 block on Portage Avenue,addressed
a o the Chief of Police was presented to the Board, requesting parking of
automobiles to be restricted in this block. The matter was referred to
r. Miller of the Engineering Department and the Chicago Motor Club, who are
ow making a traffic survey.
Dr. Pauszek was called to meet with the Board to discuss the matter of
duties of the Police Surgeon. He reported that he had consulted with previous
Police Surgeons and that the practice had been in times past f or.the Police
Surgeon to call on police officers and firemen who are reported sick and to
administer first aid in cases of accident,and that the sick officer was to
p y his doctor's expenses while off duty, and that the City was responsible
f r surgical and medical treatment in of accident.
Communication was received by the Board, addressed to the Mayor, by
Ethel Carmichael, asking for safety signs and lights at Bendix Park. This
matter was referred to the Park Board.
The Secretary reported having received quotations from six garage oper-
ators with reference to towing wrecked, stolen or abandoned cars from points
w thin the City and the general trend of prices is less than that charged by
the Stewart's Garage a short time ago. The prevailing price taken from these
quotations is $1.00 per car from any point in the City unless rear of the car
must be hoisted - in which event, charges will be 41.50. The Secretary has
i structed Stewart's Garage to comply with these prices in the future and to
r imburse the owner of the car which he towed the week of June 17th and made
a charge of 42.50.
Official bond in favor of Michael Greszcyk in the United States Fidelity &.
Guaranty Company was approved. Official bond of John Stasinski and that of
Robert Watt in the Maryland Casualty Company were approved. The Secretary
reported that only two officers are now without official bonds - these being
R x Risher and Harold Whitmer, who have continually promised to bring their
b nds in and have not done so. The Secretary was instructed to write them
a d insist upon bonds coming in at once.
IGHTS AND MEASURES
A"letter was received from Charles J. Burns stating that the - Weights and
Measures Department was in urgent need of a number of supplies for the oper-
ation of the department and also some method of conveying weights with which
t perform the duties of office. The matter was referred to the City Attorney
t investigate if compliance with his request would, in any way, affect the
c se against Mr. Burns now pending in the Courts.
