All members were present. Requisitions 1�bearing numbers 08492 to 08501 inclusive were approved. Also claims from the following suppliers in the amount of $170.86: South Bend Tribune $2036 Mio I higan Ave. Lumber Co. $34.80 R. L. Polk & Co. 45.00 Simon Brothers, Inc. 18.95 Frederick Schafer & Son 5.00 Elkhart Brass Mfg. Co. 2.00 C. L. Millhouse 50.00 Boyer Fire Apparatus'GoOl.. 12.75 POLICE DEPARTMENT— Chief Lane present: Matters pertaining to the Police Department were discussed. The Chief reported that stop signs had been placed at'I'Mishawaka Ave. and 30th Street in accordance with former instructions from the Board. Mr. Whitmer was called in to discuss the convention he attended with Officers Vandusen and Burns. Mr. Whitmer was called to prepare a list of suggestions that might appeal to him as improvement in the conduct of the Police Department and have such suggestions ready for presentation to the.Board at the next meeting. The Secretary reported the result of his investigation of the cost of compensation insurance on various departments and found that to cover the Police Department, Fire Department, Street Department, Sewer Department, Cemetery Department, Electrical Department, Dog Pound and Office on the basis of an annual pay roll of $547 --,450.00 that the cost of insurance would- amount to 49,790.00. The Board took no definite action. It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the headquarters, ffice, furniture and equipment of the Board of Public Safety be trans- erred into the office of the Board of Public Works. This change to.be made s soon as practical. It was regularly moved, seconded and carried that the Secretary be nstruoted to notify the Chief of Police that whenever a truck or other ehicle does damage to the city's lighting or traffic equipment that the ruck doing said damage be immediately impounded until the amount of loss is stablished and an acknowledgment of the indebtedness to the city be had from he owner of the truck or other vehicle. . Continuation certificate on the surety bond of Edmund F. Vitou in the land Casualty Company was approved. Official bond of Leo Williams in the United States Fidelity and Guaranty ompany was approved. Special officer's commission was approved in favor of Edward D. Prange, mployee at the Bendix Products Corporation. Application to the police force. f Edith Cagley for position as police, woman was ordered placed, on file. . - Chief Freeh present. The matter of purchase of a pumper for the Fire Department was fully iscussed and, Mayor Freyermuth being present, after a full discussion it was ecided that the Mayor, Fire Chief, Mr. Anderson and Mr. James of the Common ounoil and a mechanic from the Bendix Products Corporation, whose services ere offered by Mr. Sharlook of the Bendix Products Corporation, would make trip to Chicago and Kenosha on Wednesday to examine fire equipment in those laces. Mr. Harry Lewis and three others representing various labor unions eared before the Board regarding the purchase of fire truck and urged the rd to place the order for the pumper with the American LaFrance Company ause they claim this company is one hundred percent Union labor. The rd took their proposition underadvisement. �LECTRICAL DEPARTMENT - Mr. Qualls present: Mr. Qualls reported that the traffic signal at Olive Street and Western ve. was again broken down by the truck owned by the Great Lakes Forwarding ompany, which is the same company that broke down this signal February 25, 935. After conferring with Mr. Hunter, it was determined to hold this truck ntil settlement was made for both accidents and an agreement on the part of he 'company was secured when the truck was released. Mr. Qualls reported that new control would have to be purchased to put this signal in operation and hat in previous years he had purchased controls and other accessories from 944 _ the, Qualls. Electric. Company, for the oity, and.. the Board then discussed the advisability oP purchasing materials in his_w:ay at the present timer with the ,.-,...understanding that original invoices would.be attached to claims of the Qualls Electric Company. The Board gave Mr. Qualls permission to handle matters of this kind in this way. = DOG FOUND: Mr. Wood.presented his report for the month of May to the Boar., showing °F 226 dogs impounded, 211 "dogs destroyed and 78 cats destroyed. Gasoline consump .E tibn for the month was 75 gallons, oil consumption 13 gallons and mileage travelled 1,000. Mr. Wood also reported having collected for-,.board of doge impounded and released, also dogs sold for the month, a total"of :.39:00. T, The meeting adjourned at 11 :20. A. M. ' Y. Chairman. '.
