F klinutes of .meeting of April 15th were read and approved.. Requisitions bearing numbers 8434 to 8447 inclusive were approved. Claims in the amount of X62 :19 were approved also pay roll of police fire,�lectricial and dog pound departments in the amount of 16658: 35. Were approved. Swanson Service Co. Office Engineers Inc. Matters pertaining to his department were'discussed.The chiefreported that two of his Fire Trucks broke down in going to fire on Sunday and had to be towed in.The Board authorized necessary repairs to put these trucks in running condition. The question of appropritatio'ns for Fire Dept was discussed based on an anatysis submitted by the Secretary wherein it was foundseveral accounts were inadequated to take care of the requiremen.tsfor the balance of the year.The chief was instructed to confer with the secretary and make recommendations at a later meeting.The question of gas consumption had the particular attention of the board andthe chief and Secretary were instructed to investigate the matter carefully at ono "e.The following letter was directed to the Northern Ind Public Service Co reference to Stations that were showing an increased consumption in the last two months. Dear Sir; We believe the meters at Fire Stations and Central are indicating a greater consumption than is actually used and we would appreciate it if you would replace present meters and make necessary tests to determine if such is the case.Will you please take action regarding this matter and advise us that have done so. Application of Cecil IvTcNenry for the Fire Dept was ordered placed on file. Electrical Dept Itr C;ualls ,present. The matter of Traffic signal at Columbia :mot and the Grand Trunk tracks was discussed and Mr ;calls recommendation,Vpon motion seconed'and carried,was adopted to grant removal of signal on the south side of the tracks and to construct a double si €nal at the present signal location on the North side of the traeks.The following letter was `directed to the Railroad Co. Dear Sir; Your letter of April 10th has the attention of this Board and upon investigation please be advised that permission has been you to remove the signal on the south side of your tracks on Columbia St in the `ci.ty of South. Bend and to construct a double signal at the present location on the Na side of the tracks.Action may be taken by you at once. 1111r Qualls requested permission`to be in Indianapolis-on tuesday night and Wednesday on personal business in connection with his office in the K.of P.lodge.Tne Board concurred. The question of appropriations for the Electrical.Dept was discussed. based on analysis submitted by'the secretary.The parti.cuarl item oig coal had the attention of the Board inasmuch as the entire approriation had been consumed at this tome.Mr walls was instructed to confer with the Secretary and report at a later meeting. Police Dept Chief Lane present. The chief reported that the survey of the Chicago.Llotor`Club ` in connection with the Police Dept and theLngiiieering Dept was progressing Dr A.A.Kramer appeared before the Boardand stated that 'Homer Ames, an officer on the police force was not paying his account with him.. The Chief was instructed to have officer limes at the next regular. meeting of the Board to discus the matter. Upon recommendation of the Chief of Police,officer lied `DeLee is granted'a two Elonths leave of absenee without °pay beginning`May loth at the expiration of his annual vacation. _ The. Secretary reported that since more rigid enforcement of' parking restrictions on *the Tvorth Side of LaSalle ante, there has been a request for 15 minute parking in several places.TheBoard'decided to make no changes at the present time, The City'Attonery advised the following.letterc had been.directed -to Stewarts Garage and a copy of this has been `furnished the Chief of Police. Dear 1,Jr Sewart At a meeting of the Board of-Public Safety on April 15, 1935 it was the decision of the'Board that you be `given the business; of towing cans from the streets of the city of South Bend when called by an officer of the South Bend Pgl ee Department. This arrangement will be effective as of May 111935 and subject to the following conditions: 1.It is the will of the Board that your Grrage is not.: o make. any solicitation for repair work for yourselves or for anyother particular garage. 2.You are to hold the car subject to orders from the owners, 3.You are to make adequate proctection against pilfering of the car or contents of.car placed in your charge by the police dept, so as to fully indemnify the city' against any loss occasioned by negligence. 4.You are to furnish twenty- four(24)hour service for this work. Trusting that these arrangements will be entirely satisfactory to both parties,we are. .Very Truly.Yours - Board of Public Safety. By---- - - - - -- ----- --- - -- The question of inada,quacy of some appropriations was discussed and the'a chief was instructed to confer with the secretary and report at a later meeting. 'h chief reported receipt of "a letter from T.C.Clinton commending hlm :irifi., the service now being rendered the public reference to traffic rules.HVs._letter follows. Dear Chief: I want to congratulate you on your satnd on enforcement -of certain laws especially in regard to traffic rules and regulations., But there is one very important phase in respect to.proper tail and:kead lights on automobiles and trucks,which,under the present administration, seems to be sadly neglected. Friends from out of town,who come to visit.up remark about so many ears with only one head light,and /or no tail light and in some.. instances neither head 'lights nor tail light. Last night in driving from my home to the corner of Milton and Miami, -1 counted over fifteen cars that.. had only bne' t head light,no tail light,or no head lights at all. It is „needless to express the .hazard..to_ other motorists and pedestria?ls this practice creates. A drive on cars with improper_:lights,would fit in nicely with the other good work you are doing . Yours Very Truly, T.C.Clinton Mr Bartol and Ts Wainwright of the citie ss Service Coil Co appeared before the board to eresent a claim for gasoline furnished the Police Dept 18f in Sept • and October of 1930, claiming i t had never been. ?paid although it had been taker_ up with previous Boards and the secretary was instructed to investigate and report at the next meeting.
