Regular metting of the board of public Safetylas held on monday
April 15th 1935;at 8 :30.A.M.Al1 iiembers'were present.
The minutes of meetins of anril 8th were read and approved.

Fire Dept chief Freeh present.
Matters pertaining to his department viere discussed.Repairs
recommended by the chief to fire stations were refered to the board
of public works.
A.delegation of neighbors living in the virginity of No Scott and
Marion Sts appered before the board and presented a protest against
the Fitterling Trucking Co activities claiming them to be considerable
annoyance and requesting relief.After hearing their arguments the
board invited Dalton Ir%omaw building commissioner to the meeting
_ and a discussion was had as to the building code and ordiancewith
respect to this particular concern coming within the necessary .
requirements.It was decided to request I,ir Moomaw to make a complete
survey and report to the board at a later meeting.
Electrical Dept Mr walls present.
Lir quails presented a report of fire alarm calls for the months of
January Febuary & March together with comparisons for the same months
for ten years from 1925.These reports are on file in the office of the
Board of Public Safety.
A letter from W.J.togan Supt of the Grand Trunk testern R.R.Co at
Battle Creek 1,4ieh was read as follows.
The flashlight signals protecting traffic at crossing of Columbia
street,are located in the centre of street,south side of our tracks.
We have complaint that this location is proving very inconvenient
to traffic the signal also being located directly in the center of
driveway to the unloading dock for the Grand Trunk Terinial warehouse
Company.The signal has,as a result,been damaged on several occasions.
With the approval of the city,we would be willing to move the signal
from the center of the street and place it on a standard on the north
side of our traeks,where in our opinion,it would give ample prootection
to the croosing.de therefore respestfully request your permission to
re- locate the signal on the north side of track on the same standard
with one that is already there.
The protection referred to was established in accordance with
city oridance #2938.

After considering the matter the matter was refered to Mir walls for
investigation to report at the next meeting of the board.
Police Dept Chief Lane present.
Matters pertaining to his department were discussed.
A letter from the Mayor to the board of public safety regarding
the shooting of one of our colord citizens was discussed and taken
under advisement and the secretary was instructed to inform the i "Tayor
to this effect.
The _latter of towi necked cars from the city streets was
discussed and it was thought prise to have the towing done by a
concern in the tovzing business.0ne such concern only in the city
being found it was decided to direct the chief of police to instruct
his force to call on Stewarts Garage in all such cases beginning
I'vay ist next and that the city attorney be requested to construct a
letter to be sent to Stewarts Garage outlinning their resp_onsiblities
and duties.
It was moved and seconed and carried that officers Coil and Campbell
be commended for their efficient Service in connection -ith the
evidence secured in recent liquor investigation.The secretary Was
instructed to commumicate with the officers and the.following letter
was addressed to each.
The Board of Public Safety at its meeting Monday April 15th in
discussing the service you rendered in connection with recent liquor
investigation and the securing of conviction evidence upon motion
that you are to be commented for your work and an acknowledgement
of this is hereby tendered you.

Letter from John F.Deacon requesting relief at the corner of William
& Wayne Sts was read and the secretary was instructed to write Irir
Deacon that a traffic survey was under way by the Chicago Motor Club
in connection with the Engineering Dept and as soon as this was
completed his letter would have futhurev attention.A letter was
written Ivir Deacon as follows.

meeting monday April 15th.lease be advised that a traffic survey
is now under way by the Chicago Motor Club in connection with our
engineering dept covering tthe entire city and as soon as this is
completed your letter will have furture attention.°Ye thank you for

A rgquest for enforcement of present parkingrestriction on the North
Side of LaSalle ave between I:ichigan and plain Stswas requested by
wr pm Sheehan of the Goodyear `fire Service This matter was refered
to the chief of police,
1i .- cetaryreported a coriplaint received over the phone that no
stoy,- sign, is placed on Scott St on the North side of Lindsey St
a through Street although there is one on the South side.The matter
was refered to the chief of p1liee.
Upon instructions received from the board the secretary has been
insisting upon Surety bonds being furnished by all police officers.
At the first of the yea7, 40% of the police had surety bonde.This
has been increased to 87%.The secretary recently gave the officers
• dead line as of April 15th.The secretary was instructed to give
• list of the 13 to the chief for futhure pressure.
Surety bonds for the following officers were approved by the board.

Special officers commission to louis Gulliford was cancelled by the
board.
The following police applications were received and ordered placed
on file.

The following letter of commendation from the publie morals Dept
of the council of United churches in South Bend was received by
chief Lane.

Churches of SoBend,%ishawaka and St.Joseph County hereby express
its appreciation of the work-that you and your department are doing

in a more thorough enforcement of our laws concerning matters of
public morals.rre heartly commend your - efforts in curbing,tne use
of gambling devices,illegal places and hours "of liquor sales,
Prostitution indecent magazine sale and display,et'c;and vie hereby
offer fullest cooperation and in any way we can be of help in such
efforts.

I2r qualls brought up the question of vacations for alarm station
employes and he was instructed to arrange for regular vacations
for old employes and to give the new employes vacation to which
theyb they would be entitled if they had been in the service six
months and to make such arrangements so that the service will not.
be impaired and that the extra help is secured within the limits of
appropriation for this purpose..
