All members were present. minutes of meeting of March 25, 1935 were read and approved. Requisitions bearing the following numbers were approved: 08402 to 08410 i elusive. so claims amounting to 4455.18 from the following: i 7��* I IRE DEPARTMENT-Chief Freeh. present: discussion was had concerning the condition of fire stations and the Chief eported in detail as to repairs necessary on the buildings at this time. he Chief was instructed to investigate the cost of repairing the roof on he Central Station and report at next meeting. The matter of removing the ell on the Central Station was also discussed but no action was taken. epairs necessary to the American LaFrance Engine were authorized. ,eference to paper tape used in reporting fire alarms and return of hose ompanies to their stations, the Board directed the Chief to secure this 'rom the alarm station in the future. he Chief requested the privilege of purchasing a clock for the Central tation and he was directed to confer with the Secretary and if it can be ad at approximately five dollars permission to purchase is granted. applications for Fire Department were ordered placed on file from George ?ilchak, !11ax Yohn and Kenneth 11organ. art Hollis, undertaker, appeared before the Board with reference to a ontract to furnish ambulance service for all indigents requesting such service and an agreement was entered into as follows signed and approved by he Board and now on file in the office of the Board of Public Safety: CONTRACT South Bend, Indiana. HIS AGREE1;1ENT -IV1A15E AND ENTERED INTO THIS 1st day of April, 1935, by nd between Earl Hollis of the County of St. Joseph, State of Indiana, ereinafter referred to as the Contractor, and the City of South Bend in the County of St. Joseph and State of Indiana, by and through its Board of Public Works and Safety, hereinafter referred to as The ,City under. and by virtue of an act of the General assembly of the State of Indiana entitled "An Act Concerning Municipal Corporations" and approved 11.diaroh 6, 1905, and all amendatory and supplemental acts thereto, 4`dITNESSETH That - The Contractor covenants and agrees to furnish ambulance service for all indigents requesting such service from the city of South Bend other than emergency cases, and vill further furnish said city ambulance service in ease of emergency when a second call is required. The Contractor further expressly covenants and agrees that he will furnish twenty -four (24) hour service and will be available subject to call frolri the proper authorities; that he will excercise prot:)er skill and care and properly guard and protect all persons thus coming into his care by direc- tion of said city. That in the event of any injury or damage resulting from his service or resulting from any matter or thing connected therewith or arising therefrom to any Oerson or property, for which the City would be liable, he will pay and liquidate the same at his own expense and assume the liability therefor. It is further covenanted and agreed between the parties that the city expressly reserves the right to terminate this contract upon service of notice to said contractor, that the services perforrned by said- contractor are unsatiffactory and that other arrangeirlents have been ,:;lade. To each of the conditions of this contract, including all and singular, the provisions and terms of the particular agreements, the undersigned binds himself or itself and the respective successor or assigns of said parties. POLICE BEE -1-A ih T-Chief Lane present: It was moved, seconded and carried that the Chief be instructed to watch closely the Isliasicians' Club, the Bovaery and all other so- c��lle() clubs and bring thew in at once for violations of the li r,uor lal,,v and to see that all advertising signs, curtains and ou.toffs are removed. Ellis Diver, pensioner, requested the Board to give hi. >)eriiLssion to wear a pel_sioner's. `badge as had been done in the past.. The matter" of furnyishin equipment to Police officers was reported by the Chief as being as follows: gun, belt, badge, bill7T, vhistle arid- box -key. The Chief` ceras instructed to wake a. survey of the gun equipment among the officers and report some plan of starLdardi�aa.tion. Resip-nation of Bert C. Kochanowski was accepted to take effect as of April 8, 1935. The Board a.,-)proved a two weeks' vacation for Officer Kochanowski with pay from April 8 to 22nd. Appointment on the - police force of Joseph E. Ball to fill the vacancy created by.the resignation'of Bert C. Kochanowski Vas approved by the Board to begin April 8, 1935 on probation for sixrionths at salary designated for that period subject to assignment of the Chief of Police. Louis Shannon amoointed by the Tvlayor as City Electrician was granted a special police commission. The Chief of Police was instructed to -proceed ytith the target practice the basis of the proposal of the St. JOSeph for officers of the force on in their letter of February 15, Valley Rifle Associati_n as outlined Valley 1935 signed by TI aurice A.. A report coming from residents on West Sample St. between the Washington School and the Grand Trunk crossing that an alarm box is needed between these two points on Sample St. was brought to the attention of ``the Board and was referred to Tv r. �,ualls for investigation. Report was ade that Steve Lupa of 1821 S. William St., driver of a �mov,ing van, tipped over a traffic light at Tiiichigan & Viashington Sts. The mat ,er was referred to I'vir. Qualls with instructions to make up a report._of damage and refer to the Board at its next meeting. 1,�r. walls was instructed when he purchases tape for the electrical department to purchase sufficient in addition to supply the Fire Department.
