HomeMy WebLinkAbout02/25/1935 Board of Public Safety MinutesREGULAR MEETING Regular meeting of the Board of Public Safety was held at 8:30 A. M. Monday, February 25, 1935. Mr. Woodward was absent. Minutes of the meeting of February 18, 1935 were read and approved. Requisitions bearing the following numbers were approved: 08330 to 08343 inclusive, 08345 to 08349 inclusive. Also claims amounting to 4469.65 from the following: Taylor's Service Stores 417..27 Wi.lhelmts Auto Body Shop 4 12.00 Ditto 44.30` U.S. Fingerprint Prod.Co. 10.75 .75 Abso Clean Cloth Co. 5.50 �* 25900 Noisom- Jeweler 1.00 n .50 Frank S. Electric Co. 6.28 Belleville Lumber & Sup. Co. 62.50 -Hamilton Rubber Mfg. Co. 235.00 The case of Police Chief Laurence J. Lane vs. 1m. Ortman was called and evidence was taken from the following: Irwin D. Landis Mrs. Wm. Ortman Miss Eleanor McMillen John Nichols John McMillen Wm. Ortman Chief L. J. Lane After hearing the evidence, the Board withheld its decision until its next regular meeting. FIRE DEPARTMENT -Chief Freeh present: Matters pertaining to this department were discussed. Bids on 1000 feet of'fire hose were opened and upon recommendation of Chief Freeh, the order was placed as follows: Boston Woven Hose Co. 400 feet Q 950 per foot Manhattan Rubber Co. 300 feet G 95¢ per foot American LaFrance Co. 300 feet Q 95¢ per foot Chief Freeh outlined first aid equipment that was badly needed and he was authorized by the Board to purchase such-supplies from the Reliance Pharmacy. ELECTRICAL DEPARTMENT-Mr. Qualls present: Mr. Qualls brought up the question of stop light visors, demonstrating a new construction which would prevent excessive breakage that has been experienced in the past and at the same time save approximately $6.00 per installation in original cost_. The Secretary was instruc- ted to look up an appropriation and report at the meeting, Monday, March 4th. Mr. Qualls reported that he would like to have the privilege .of changing the placing of the order for plates for the Fire Alarm system with the American Automatic Electric Sales Co. instead of the Gould Storage Battery Co. at the same or lesser price. The Board concurred. Mr. Qualls reported damage to traffic signal at Western Ave. and Olive St. caused by one of the trucks of the .Great Lakes Forwarding Co. The matter was referred to the City Attorney. POLICE DEPARTMENT -Chief Lane present: Mr. Irving Hurwich representing the Indiana Cab Co. and Mr. Geo. Farage, representing the South Bend Cab Co. appeared before the Board and were advised that the Board postponed the execution it had given the Indiana Cab Co. of parking privilege on Jefferson St. at Michigan until its meeting on March 4th because there had been so many objections on the part of other cab companies and that the. Mayor had promised the South Bend Cab Co. a hearing before any privilege would be granted. The Secretary was instructed to notify all cab companies.to appear on Monday, March 4th so that an analysis of the cab situation in South Bend could be made. In the matter'of L. C. Bishop who complained about truck parking in front of his garage, the Chief reported that as far as possible the matter would be taken care of by his department. Continuation certificates on the bonds of the following officers in the Employers Liability Assurance Corporation were approved: Robert L. Seals Ralph Light Otis Cunningham Emil DeWespelaer The Board approved the appointment as Special Officer at the Oliver Hotel of C. A. Hood upon his replacement of Jack W. Lee. The Board approved cancellation of special officer's permits of Wm. Bushor* and Paul Sinders upon request of the Sriver Detective Service to whom they were delegated. The Board decided to approve a request from the Fraternal Order of Police, through the Mayor. The field day to be held some time in the summer as as not to interfere with the regular duties of the police. The meeting adjourned at 11:15 A. M. i iA .. Attest Clerk
