? Regular meeting`of the Board of Public Safety was held Monday,.February
18, 1935 at 9:00 A. M. All members were present.

Minutes of meeting of February 11, 1935 approved as read.
Requisitions bearing the following numbers were approved: 08241 to
08250 and 08326 to 08329.
Also claims in the amount of $199.35 from the following:

Irving A. Hurwich, attorney,.appeared before the Board in the interests
of his client, the Indiana Cab Co. and presented a petition for a'two
car cab stand at the northeast corner of Jefferson and Michigan Sts. to
be along the north curb of Jefferson St., substantiated by consent of
the owner of the building, the tenant of the location immediately
affected and the Chief of Police. Approval of this permit was granted
by the Board. In granting this permit, the Indiana Cab Co. relinquishes
their present stand on the north east corner of Michigan & LaSalle.
FIRE DEPARTMENT -Chief Freeh present:
Application of Louis Szabo for the Fire Dapertment was approved and
ordered placed on file.
Matters pertaining to the department were discussed and the Chief was
given permission to purchase two tires and tubes that are badly needed
on one of the fire trucks.
The Chief explained the condition of the fire hose equipment and that
he should have at this time another 1000 feet. The Board instructed
the Secretary to secure bids.
ELECTRICi.L DEPARTMENT -Wm. Qualls present:
The question of battery replacement for the Fire alarm system was
' discussed and Mr. Qualls was authorized to purchase plates from the
Gould Storage Battery Co. upon their competitive bid of $769.23.
The signal traffic light at Lincoln Way West and William St, was dis-
cussed and Mr. Qualls was instructed to investigate the cost of
changing to corner post signals and report to the Board at its next
meeting.
POLICE DEPARTMENT -Chief Lane present:
Mr. Otto Entzian of the South Bend Cab Co. was called in response to
his letter of February 15, 1935 in which he requested the privilege of
a two cabstand at the corner of Michigan & Jefferson Sts. on the west
side of Michigan St., northeast corner. The matter was referred to the
Chief of Police for investigation.
The question of towing wrecked cars was brought up by the Chief and
discussed. The Chief reported that a meeting of garage owners had been
called by him and they decided to take wrecked cars to the dealer of
that particular car and that the Gill -Vorn Co. is to do the towing.
The Chief was instructed to take orphan cars to the Redmer Garage at
110 E. Dubail St.
The Chief recommended that officer Wm. Ortman be suspended pending
investigation of reported misconduct and charges or resignation, to
take effect as of 4 o'clock P.M. February 18 giving him two days* pay
after February 15. The Board concurred and the Secretary was instru-
cted to officially notify Officer Ortman.
The strike situation at the Oliver Farm Equipment Co. was dis cussed
and the Chief informed the Board of developments. At this point
Mayor Freyermuth appeared.to discuss with the Board a statement he was
_preparing for publication suggesting a solution of the strike problems
and arrive at a method of
by way of appointing committees to discuss
settlement. The Board heartily concurred in the suggestion of the
Mayor..
L. C. Bishop, through the ,Secretary, filed a co:iplaint that trucks'
parking in the 300 block on Lincoln .Way West park in front of his garage
even though the curb is painted. He would like to have signs placed
so as to keep entrance to his garage open.` The matter was referred
to the Chief of Police.
The Board authorized a special police permit in favor of Earl Cotteril
with authority at the City Dump at the Hoffman Grav (bl Pit road
Applications for position on the police force by Charles Etter, Jr. and
Billy bl. Cholasinski were approved and ordered placed on file.
Official surety bond of Justus C. Bloom with the U. S. Fidelity and
`Guaran-ty Co. was approved and ordered placed on file.
continuation certificate of Horace M. Hamilton was approved.
