Employee Engagement-
Staff Training: Three custodial employees, Brian Black, Ricky Lane, and James Hopkins completed a workshop involving "on the job" training on the preventative maintenance VCT tile floors.
Engagement: A new 70-inch TV and computer was installed in the employee breakroom for City/VPA updates, presentations, and training videos that can be shared with employees.
Operations-
Landscaping: Completed the Elbel Entrance Way beautification with Rhododendrons, ferns, and trees added to the landscaping. Additionally the Smart Streets landscaping beds were mulched
and the Round-About, Planter bowls, and Mayor's Lot were planted for the season.
Best. Week. Ever.: F&G supported BWE logistics with a total of 850 hours involving, part time, fulltime, and supervisor hours.
Centralized Mowing: Code mowing kicked off May 7th with 437 schedule properties. At the end of May we saw 482 abatements and 162 CBOs. In addition, 655 City owned properties were
mowed.
Kennedy and Potawatomi Pools are prepped for the 2018 season.
Skilled Trades: Completed 291 Work Orders in the month of May. Additionally, they also installed the Powell Family Memorial Bench at Leeper Park. This bench was donated by the Powell
family to properly dedicate the site of a prominent African American family and their importance to the history of South Bend.
Grounds: Mowed 812 hours (1,624 acres) and supported special events such as the SBCSC Summer Lunch Program, Gone Fishing, Girls on the Run, and the SBPD Fallen Officers Ceremony.
Forestry: Planted 33 trees, watered 210, trimmed 305 trees through the City and parks, and removed seven trees which impacted public safety. Currently we are working with the Bowman
Creek Ecosystem interns and Public Works to install more urban tree nurseries on the West side of town.
Projects-
Kelly Park: Planted 12 trees and 82 arborvitaes at Kelly Park. The trees and plants were all purchased and donated by the Kelly Park neighborhood group. Also installed was a custom
designed and built carousal bike rack by the Kelly Park neighborhood group and a local group of blacksmiths.
Southeast Park: Three new steel doors were installed on the pavilion and 4 new banquet style tables (seats 16) were also installed.
Rum Village Disc Golf: 4 new disc golf pads were poured and 3 new baskets installed.
Rum Village Dog Park: The unsalvageable structures at Safetyville were demolished and disposed of. Two buildings remain and will be demolished prior to the construction. The new construction
project was publicly advertised, bid, and awarded in May.
Mentored Mowing: Greater Impact Landscaping was awarded the Mentored Mowing contract which pairs South Bend youth with summer jobs and a mentorship program which seeks to develop work
and business experiences. This program mows and maintains vacant and abandoned lots within the City.
Granada at the Palais: Major renovations were finished at the Granada including painting, wallpaper, carpeting, and new tables and chairs.
Palais Awnings: New awnings and blade signs were installed on the exterior of the Palais- highlighting the rebranding of the Grenada.
Morris Marquee: New high-resolution LED panels were installed in the Morris Marquee. Not only is this new product a better quality- it also allows more flexibility for the staff to
program and generate content for it.
