To set one 401 pole on the north-east corner of the alley between St. Louis Street and St. Peters St., and the alley between Madison Street and LaSalle St. This to enable them to con- nect the St. Louis Boulevard lighting to the overhead distributing system. Approved. The following petition was filed with the. Board. To the Honorable Board of Public Works: - Your petitioners asking that the extension of Portage Ave. be 42 instead of 50 feet wide, between the curbs, beg leave to present the following reasons for the request: First:- We believe that the avenue will be more beautiful, the abrupt widening From 32 to 50 feet at the end of -the present car -line would give a far more awkward appearance . than would the change to 4 2 feet. Then, with 50 feet between the curbs there is left only 20 feet for walks, borders and shade trees, and the park -way effect would be far less pleasing than with 24 feet on each side. The boulevard effect can be made very fine with 24 feet; while it cannot be produced with 4 feet less space. a Second: The matter of expense. It will cost between $12,000 and $15000 to pave the 8 feet strip additional to the 42 feet. The cost of avenue improvements gill .be heavy at best and any unnecessary expense will make more difficult, the receiving unaminous consent of property holders for the paving of street. That 42 feet is ample with a single track, is conceded by all, but it has been suggested that a double track maybe at some future time re- quired. In answer to this suggestion we beg to state that if the population in that part of the City incenses, a belt line returning along some street farther west, is more probable as it would be more profitable than a double track on Portage; particularly as the present paved portion is only 32 feet wide. But,if in the far future a double track is required, the burb can be set back'the required"distance, at no exepnse, However, we point to Michigan Ave. 17here a double track is operated without inconveience on a street not over 42 feet bet- tween the curbs. For these reason$: the beauty of the avenue, the added-exepnse , and the lack of nee- essity we respectfully urge you to re -consider your former action and fix the width of thw paved, street at 42 feet. Approved with the understanding that the r6adwiy :sijalllbe:•widened to 50 feet when the double track is extended along Portage Avenue. Otto C.
